Is your dog always scratching? They might have canine atopic dermatitis (cAD) — and now a collaboration of veterinary scientists and experts across Mars have found a genetic variant that may explain why.
Thanks to DNA data from Wisdom Panel™, clinical data from Banfield® Pet Hospital, and clinical samples from the MARS PETCARE BIOBANK™, Wisdom Panel researchers published a study in Frontiers in Veterinary Science that found French Bulldogs and Boxers with a variant in the SLAMF1 gene are about twice as likely to develop cAD.
These lovable giants have a history as hard-working pups, performing tasks such as hauling fishing nets out of the sea or making daring water rescues. They also have a sweet, patient disposition that makes them great with kids and an all-around excellent family member.

A dark mask on a dog's face can give them a mysterious look. But there's no mystery behind why they have it. This coat pattern is caused by a variant known as Em in the MC1R gene. It's a dominant trait, so only one copy of the gene is needed for dogs to express the trait.
