After nearly six decades of equine surgery, Dr. McCashin has transitioned to less strenuous equine activities to include alternative medicine, second opinions, and consultations working with other veterinarians.

Xyla-Meanie!

Have you ever seen a horse develop a behavioral reaction to the common sedative Xylazine (also known as Rompun)? Occasionally, horses will pin their ears and bite after administration of this drug! We like to refer to these animals as "Xyla-Meanies!" The video shows a normally mild-mannered miniature horse displaying typical "Xyla-Meanie" behavior! Horses with this reaction are fine, they behave normally when the sedation wears off, and we usually just select a different drug to administer for future sedation! Enjoy! :)
