We ❤️ our town! Go Venice!

❤️❤️❤️ Heartwarming story alert! ❤️❤️❤️

At 7:10 this morning, VPD Criminalistics Manager Cheryl Prevatte was on her way to work from Bay Indies and passed by a mother duck and one tiny duckling. Mama duck was frantic and squawking more than a normal duck would, so Cheryl backed up and watched her closely for a few seconds. The mother duck seemed to be circling the water drain in the road. Cheryl looked in the drain and located 5 more ducklings. Somehow, they swam through the drain pipe and were not able to see to get back to Mom.

Knowing this would end badly without intervention, Cheryl called Fleet Manager Travis Hout from Public Works and asked him to make an emergency run to the first pond in Bay Indies. Travis and Heavy Equipment Operator Chris Bruns were there within 10 minutes with a board and crowbar to lift the drain cover, put the board in the drain hole and give the mama duck the opportunity to call to her ducklings from the pond and help them get out.

Thank you to Cheryl, Travis and Chris for responding to the call for help and reuniting this duck family. We appreciate all you do for our residents -- even the feathered ones!
