We are thrilled to share that Huxley is making very good progress after his recent Bilateral P4T2 Patella Arthroplasty, a procedure to stabilize both his left and right kneecaps.
In the first photo, you can see one of our dedicated Patient Assistant’s, Malia , giving Huxley some love and care during his visit today. Huxley has being doing great during his recovery process, and Dr.Holsworth is happy to report that his kneecaps are central and stable as we hoped for.
Thanks to everyone who’s been rooting for him!🐶🐾

Luffy recently underwent Perineal Urethrostomy, a critical surgery for cats dealing with severe urinary blockages. This condition can cause extreme discomfort and pose serious health risks if left untreated. To address this, we surgically created a new, wider opening in Luffy’s urethra, which will help prevent future blockages and allow him to urinate more easily.
This surgery is common for male cats like Luffy who suffer from recurrent obstructions, as their narrow urethra can easily become blocked by stones or debris. We’re happy to report that Luffy’s surgery went smoothly, and he’s now on the mend! 🐈😺

Meet Luna!🌚🐶… this adorable 10 week old fluffball of a Newfoundland had a trip-and-fall this weekend only two days after joining her new family…. and broke her leg!
Fractures are classified into different types depending on the bone broken, the number of bone pieces present, and their overall severity…. Luna has a non-displaced greenstick fracture which will very likley heal with a support cast and will not need surgery… if she doesn’t trip and fall again!
We were happy to assess her and build a recovery cast for her right back leg and will continue to monitor her fracture healing over the next month…. good luck fluffball!💕
Stay tuned to see how she does!

Kaya, one of our dedicated surgical assistants at Vetsurg, is pictured with Anastasia. Last week, Dr. Ludwig performed a thoracotomy on Anastasia, a procedure involving opening the chest cavity to remove a likely cancerous mass. The chest CT report confirmed the presence of a primary lung mass within Anastasia’s left cranial lung lobe. This tumor, originating from the lung tissue itself, is amendable to surgical removal. Dr. Ludwig performed this procedure through an incision extending between the ribs, ensuring the best approach for Ana’s condition. Additionally, a scar revision was done near her left eye. Our team ensured Anastasia’s safety and comfort throughout the entire surgery, and we look forward to seeing her soon to see how she is recovering!🐾💙

Say Bongiorno to Huxley!🐾 Huxley recently visited us for a left and right knee 4-step patellar (aka.kneecap!) stabilization procedure ( Bilateral P4T2 Patellar Arthroplasty). Huxley’s kneecaps are unstable and unfortunately continue to dislocate out of the grooves they live in… this complex but common surgery was performed by Dr. Holsworth, and aimed to stabilize Huxley’s kneecaps and improve his mobility.
Dr. Holsworth used the innovative Italian-developed Tibial Tuberosity Transportation Tool and Technique (TTTT2), which allows precise re-centering of the tibial tuberosity to ensure proper patellar tracking with minimal bone implants. This method utilizes a special dynamic jig that migrates the attachment site of the patellar tendon utilizing intact bone bending rather than more invasive bone cutting. This technique was developed by Dr. Holsworth’s good friend and fellow surgeon Dr. Massimo Pettazoni with assistance from Californian veterinarian Dr. Scott Fetherston in Milan, North Italy. Hence why Dr. Holsworth is proudly wearing his Italian surgical scrub cap!
The procedure went smoothly, and Huxley is now on the road to recovery. He will require 4-6 weeks of activity restriction to ensure proper healing. We’re committed to supporting Huxley through this recovery journey and getting him back to his active, happy self! 🇮🇹💙

Meet Finn! Finn came to Vetsurg for surgery to treat a Left Distal Tibial Salter-Harris Fracture. This fracture involves the bone growth plate directly above the ankle joint and is a challenging fracture due to the very small cuff of bone below the fracture and above the joint. Dr. Webb used our portable X-ray machine in the OR, allowing for precise radiographic guidance throughout the surgical procedure.
With this advanced technology, Dr. Webb was able to evaluate the fracture, place needles for proposed pin placements, insert pins into the bone, and confirm their proper positioning. Finn is doing great post-op, and we look forward to seeing him for a revisit soon!💙🐾

Riley consulted with us after jumping out of the car and suffering a complex fracture to her right hind leg. Recognizing the urgency, we admitted her through our new Urgent Orthopedic service (UrgOrtho) for surgical repair the same day.
Dr. Webb performed the surgery utilizing the new Arthrex 3.5mm Proximal Femoral Ortholine Plate (PFF), marking a significant milestone as it was the first time this advanced plate had been used in surgery at Vetsurg. Dr. Holsworth is also the co-designer of the PFF plate. This innovative anatomic plate is designed to provide superior stability and support for complex fractures, facilitating a more efficient healing process. Riley is on the road to recovery and we will do our best to get her pain free and back to good mobility.🦴❤️‍🩹

This week Anya came to us with a partial Achilles tendon tear which is a painful injury causing significant lameness. Dr. Holsworth performed Musculoskeletal Ultrasound to visualize and document the location and severity of the tendon damage, followed by an ultrasound-guided Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) injection directly into the damaged tendon area. This injection will be repeated 2-3 times at 3 week intervals. PRP is used to shorten and enhance the tendon healing time and combined with a support splint for 6-10 weeks will hopefully allow Anya to heal without a major surgical intervention. Good luck Anya! 💙

Meet Rayne!… today, Dr. Ludwig and our skilled surgical team successfully performed a laparoscopic gastropexy and o***y removal on her. Pre-surgery, utilizing ultrasound-guidance we inject local anesthetic around the abdominal wall sensory nerves to decrease the amount of anesthesia gas needed and improve post-operative comfort. This minimally invasive surgery is crucial in preventing gastric dilatation-volvulus(GDV) also called stomach bloat and torsion and is a significant health risk in many breeds. We are pleased to report that Rayne is in recovery and receiving excellent post operative care.❤️‍🩹

The three day VAT Workshop this week brought together vet orthopedic surgeons from around the country to share their experiences, case management, surgical procedures and the latest equipment and implants. The workshop was excellent, the friendship’s were reinforced, and many new procedures shared between attendees. It is teaching week and we joined the Senior Vet Surgery Residents in the ArthroLab in Florida for three days to help expose & guide them through advanced joint surgery… Dr. Holsworth is the Co-Chair of the course and as his 15th year as a faculty member he is honoured to be part of this fantastic opportunity to aid in new surgeon’s education and evolution. Andrew, one of our registered veterinary technicians (RVT), is pictured cuddling Snickers during his recent recheck examination. Snickers is doing well 2 weeks post-surgery on a broken elbow. Keeping a rambunctious puppy calm during recovery can be challenging but his family is doing an incredible job.
