Dottie Dunnigan is a licensed dog obedience trainer with over 30 years’ experience working with owners and their dogs. She has operated K9 Nutt Dog Training since 1991, offering dog training and pet sitting. Dottie received her certification in kennel management and obedience dog training from the Pro-Train Dog Training Institute in San Diego, California. She earned her AA degree from Ventura Coll

ege and is licensed with the City of Ventura. Dottie has helped clients build their dogs’ foundation in achieving their goals for Companion Dog, protection, Pet Therapy, Agility, AKC Obedience and Rally titles. She is often consulted for pet selection and evaluation of training needs, as well as serving as a Canine Good Citizenship and Pet Therapy evaluator. She has held dog obedience courses for Ventura College Community Services and the City of Carpinteria. She also taught classes at The Pet Barn and The Wharf in Ventura, CA. Before that, she worked as a dog trainer for Shepherds of Leybourne in Arroyo Grande, CA, and also as a veterinarian assistant for All Cats Clinic in Ventura, CA. Some of her special experiences are helping kids with the Loma Vista 4-H Club train their dogs in Obedience and Rally, as well as attending Westminster in 2008 in support of the #5 Pomeranian in the nation to whom she bred her Champion female. Just came across this… fan fact the little black box warning states we do not vaccinate unhealthy dogs. This means neurological, gastro, autoimmune conditions, allergy and ye**ty dogs, CANCER! I personally do not do rabies until after the one yr mark or after the age of 5. If you have a cancer babe your dvm should be giving you a medical waiver! If they dont, they are not the vet you want!

Preventing unwanted litters is a goal we all share—but it's time to rethink the surgical approach. Hysterectomies and vasectomies, which preserve hormonal balance, can safely be performed as early as 8 weeks of age, making dogs sterile without disrupting their natural hormones.

In this study, researchers looked at whether the age at which dogs were spayed or neutered, meaning how long they were exposed to their natural s*x hormones, affected how healthy they were in old age. They studied a group of long-lived pet dogs to learn what helps dogs live longer, healthier lives. Dogs with the fewest age-related health problems were considered the most “robust.”

The results showed that both male and female dogs who kept their hormones longer (i.e., were spayed or neutered later) were 3 to 10 times more likely to be healthy in old age compared to those altered earlier. Once hormone exposure and age were taken into account, there was no difference in old-age health between males and females.

This study highlights how important s*x hormones may be for staying healthy later in life and shows that early-life decisions—like when to spay or neuter—can have long-term effects on health.
