Copied and pasted but true… I know well bred puppies seem expensive. But the people selling their Pomeranians for $1000 or less that seem to always have puppies available I can assure you are cutting corners. My first Pomeranians were not well bred. I loved them just the same but I always wondered why didn’t they look like the Poms I saw in the dog shows in tv? Breeding. Genetics. That’s why.

POTENTIAL OWNER: How much is the puppy?
BREEDER: $3,000+ dollars.

POTENTIAL OWNER: What?? It's way too expensive!!

BREEDER: What do you think would be a good price?

POTENTIAL OWNER: No more than $500. You breeders are so overpriced.

BREEDER: I am sorry you see it this way; why don't you try it yourself?

POTENTIAL OWNER: But I've never done it!

BREEDER: For FREE, I can teach you how to do it, and you will also have the knowledge of how to do it again.

POTENTIAL OWNER: Perfect, thank you!

BREEDER: To start, you will need a female(average cost $3500 and up)and a male(average cost $3500 and up) or semen (average $2000-$2500 and up). You will need to do & pass OFA Breed specific OFA health testing on them, which averages about $800+ per dog.

Let's not forget progesterone testings, inseminations, ultrasounds, x-rays, semen collections, semen analysis, potentially semen overnight shipping, and so on ($1500+).
Raise and provide daily care, feeding & grooming for two years. (minimal $250 per month) Oh, don’t forget monthly prevention, annual vet visits, and any other additional vet visits.

POTENTIAL OWNER: But I don't have that much money...

BREEDER: For $1200, you can raise a litter and then keep one of the puppies. Obviously, you will pay the cost of whelping & care.

POTENTIAL OWNER: I can do that.

BREEDER: OK, so I have a female due to whelp in 2 weeks. You will need to be available 24/7 around the clock for at least 9-12 weeks to help with delivery and care. ( a million loads of laundry) Another 4-plus weeks to monitor mom and puppies.

POTENTIAL OWNER: twelve weeks?? It's way too much time for me! I have to work.

BREEDER: Plus, You will need to be available for puppy families to call you 24/7 with a worry or concern, no matter the age. You MUST also be ready to take back the puppy/dog at any age if the family has an unforeseen emergency.

BREEDER: You will also need the reproductive vet to do progesterone testing($110/ test ), X-ray to get headcount ($100) & C-section($1000-$5000 if needed), and initial vet care on pups until old enough to be placed ($800+).
Have on hand a scale, thermometer, latex gloves, puppy pads, incubator, oxygen concentrator, nebulizer, heating lamp, whelping box, puppy pen, blankets, toys, bowls, cleaning supplies, appropriate food with supplements for mothers, formula, medications & hand feeding supplies in case of emergency...

POTENTIAL OWNER: But I don't have all these things!

BREEDER: For $5000+, you can buy them.

POTENTIAL OWNER: Ummm .... You know, I think it might be better if I just buy a puppy.

BREEDER: Wise decision.
For us, there are no vacations or holidays; while you go to visit with family & friends, we are home at our dogs' side caring for them. It is a no-break commitment.

THIS IS THE REALITY
When you choose a reputable person, you aren’t only purchasing the puppy but also knowledge, support, experience, love, time, sacrifices, etc...
**Plus the cost of lifetime support to the puppy owners…
These numbers are just the tip of the iceberg, (best-case scenario!!!) As a reputable breeder who takes on this journey full-time!

TRUTH...

Breeding is traumatic

At some point when you breed you will experience trauma. It might be your first litter, it might be your fifteenth. If you breed with any sort of longevity…you will experience trauma.

I have had to go through things that have scarred me for life, things that I wouldn't wish on my worst enemies

You will lose puppies.
You will lose one of your girls.
You will lose both at the same time.
You will loose dogs
People will be cruel to your dogs and not all buyers will keep in contact no matter how much you try.

You will deal with human beings who won’t like you because you won’t sell them a dog, because you breed animals they don’t like, Any number of reasons, really.

You will deal with the stress of vet bills when an unexpected whelping complication occurs. You will deal with overzealous mamas who get urine burns on their lips. You will have Years that no matter what you try your girls won't take or they reabsorb litters.

You will deal with animals you bred being sick, despite how hard you tried to avoid it. You will deal with upset owners who were expecting perfection because unrealistic standards are ascribed to breeders who health test and title.

I make no apologies for the dogs I’ve bred over the years. I have regrets and sadness over certain occurrences, but I am not sorry for the dogs I’ve created who bring their owners joy.

I have experienced trauma, I have many sleepless nights and tears, but I also find joy in what I do.

If you choose to breed, you will too. And you need to decide how much you can take.

Sharing because it needs to be shared. There are many many Animal Rights groups pushing legislation that sounds great! End puppy mills. Ban cruel practices. The list goes on but the fine print tells a different story that only those in the world of breeding will understand. What these laws really do is encourage bigger commercial kennel breeding because they are the ones who can afford the permits while the smaller preservation breeders who wish to breed from their home and raise dogs bedside are simply pushed out because they either won’t conform to the ridiculous requirements or pay the insane permit fees. What sounds good on paper may not be practical or truly in the dogs best interest, when the laws that are already on the books do a great job if only they were enforced. Next time a law comes across your locality’s books- Read the fine print, check with the AKCs web page, and ask your responsible breeder friends if it’s truly helpful or harmful. Remember- ARs number one goal is to END pet ownership altogether. They do this one small step at a time until… oh no… there are no more pets.

Holiday puppy purchases are coming and this article is well written. Please do your research before buying a puppy and if you aren’t sure what to look for, consult the parent breed club for a recommendation.

Never assume that a dog came from a reputable breeder simply because it’s purebred.

Please share far and wide to anyone considering any sort of "DOODLE" as a family pet. These dogs come with a HUGE price tag, and often are claimed to come from "health and temperament tested stock" However no one considers the repercussions of breeding two different breeds and how that affects structure development. Besides that- health tested can mean a lot of things. Ask most breeders about specific tests and OFA and they're like "whats that?" they think health test means the vet said they're healthy based an office exam. They have not spent hundreds on the x rays for OFA tests.... but again you cross breeds and it can all go out the window.
