"How much weight can a horse carry?

In my experience, a horse can carry an infinite amount.

They can carry the weight of broken hearts, broken homes, and broken bodies. Countless tears sometimes comb their tangled manes. Moments when parents and friends cannot be there to help and hold a person, horses embrace and empower. They carry physical, mental, and emotional handicaps. They carry hopes and dreams; and they will carry the stress from your day when you can't carry it anymore.

They carry graduations, they carry new careers, they carry moves away from everything familiar, they carry marriages, they carry divorces, they carry funerals, they carry babys before they are born, and sometimes they carry the mothers who cannot carry their own baby. They carry mistakes, they carry joy, they carry the good and they carry the bad. They carry drugs and addictions, but they also carry the celebrations.

They will carry you to success when all you have felt is failure. They will carry you, never knowing the weight of your burdens and triumphs.

If you let them, they will carry you through life, and life is hard, life is heavy. But a horse will make you feel weightless under it all."

This is the leading principle behind trauma informed care and our program goals alongside our equine partners.

Two years ago, a horse named Freya saved my life. Her and I would cross paths weeks from a failed su***de attempt on my part, and a journey through the slaughter bound auction for her.

She’s helped me believe in something during dark periods of my life when I didn’t even believe in myself. Through her I have found purpose, begun to face my traumas, and heal wounds that were festering for a long time.

Through my work with horses, the shame attached to my alcoholism, criminal history, and personal failures has turned to a very proud boisterous call to others like me.

“If I can do this, so can you”

Our connection to horses is in our DNA, and through this we learn to SEE with everything but our eyes; our ears, our hearts, our hands.

We are healing ❤️‍🩹 over here, and there is plenty of room for all of us.

Boundary setting: the most important skill in relationship with self and relationships with others.

Two fundamental beings play a role in boundary setting from infancy through early 20’s:

Your PRIMARY CAREGIVERS

If in any of the 7 developmental eras your needs have not been met, you will carry an inner child with you for your entire life that will regress your that place when met with the same stimuli.

This will occur to you begin reparenting that inner child.

DID YOU KNOW⁉️ Grain time gain time! 💪🏻 It’s bulking season for these two:

Dante and Dutch here were recently rescued and came in at a 3 of 9 on the body condition scale. They are on grain to help them rebuild, and based on their current weights, eat roughly a full 50lb bale of hay a day EACH.

Horses stomachs range in size from 2 to 4 gallons on average.

This is why a power packed diet is so important. No fillers, no excess.

Based on best practices, Equine diets should at least consist free choice hay and will typically consume up to (or more than) 2% of their body weights in forage.

Concentrates like grain should contain proteins and fats to help support the growing, hard to keep, and working horses.

Humane Education: DID YOU KNOW⁉️

New York State Education Law §809 states the following-

“The officer, board or commission authorized or required to prescribe courses of instruction shall cause instruction to be given in every elementary school under state control or supported wholly or partly by public money of the state, in the humane treatment and protection of animals and the importance of the part they play in the economy of nature as well as the necessity of controlling the proliferation of animals which are subsequently abandoned and caused to suffer extreme cruelty.”

Humane education is a fundamental learning component of children, and it’s most impactful is when instruction is given to children of elementary school ages.

It has been proven that early introduction to Humane education develops prosocial behaviors and empathy and molds these individuals into more conscientious, well-rounded members of society.

This instruction should be given in each and every school operating with public funds. If you feel your district is lacking, reach out to the superintendent.

In the meantime, bring them to the barn.

Our programs will help not only teach them empathy, but also camaraderie, perseverance, work ethic, and goal setting.

🐴🐴These B O Y S 😍😩

How perfect are they.

It’s going on 48 hours since adding them to the herd, and boy had it been an adventure.

Dutch experienced choke his very first morning, and we are so thankful to Rhinebeck Equine and Dr. Rosenbaum for truly being such a gem and taking GREAT care of our boy.

(We will share a video of the care he received shortly to help educate the public, and be transparent about what happens here on the farm and the care the horses receive)

I think he just wanted to be sure I was paying attention 😉

Other than that, the companionship these two offer each other as a bonded pair made their adoption and move to the farm seamless.

•no shut down

We are so grateful for the team at 13 Hands Equine Rescue, Inc. for saving them and giving us the opportunity to offer a home to these big beautiful guys.

They are already becoming a farm favorite!

✨ ⭐️ S I G N S ⭐️✨

A few days ago this penny 🪙 appeared in the aisle of the barn, but tails side up.

Monday night myself and the herd made some major shifts, were faced with intense negative energy, and turned our focus hard fast toward change, and the future.

Due to the timing, I REFUSED to take ownership of that penny.

It remained in the aisle, noticed, but untouched and with energy diverted for multiple days.

Today, an event triggered some feelings for me, and then I noticed….

A change, and a sign of what’s to come. Shortly after I came across this message:

“Get clear on your goals.

Get clear on your dedication to achieving those goals.

~and get clear on being uncomfortable during the process.

Gain clarity on possible outcomes of risks, but don't avoid risk simply because it's uncomfortable... success lives outside your comfort zone.”

DO IT SCARED.

The herd and I are ready for what comes in this journey to failing forward.

STARTING TODAY, THE TIDES HAVE TURNED

They took us into battle.
They took us across unknown terrain.
They took us over the threshold into farming and better diets.
They have without a doubt helped drive human civilization and advancement forward.

They are our equals. Not possessions, not pets, but an extremely honorable being that deserves a seat at the table.

The horse is naturally neophobic, that means it has an extreme dislike for the new or unfamiliar - the dirty word “SPOOK” is part of this phobia.

However, we we must remember, is that as prey animals they live in constant hyper vigilance and alert out of sheer survival instinct.

The more we work with horses the more they reveal themselves to be the most trainable and gentle animal on the planet.

Their trainability and willingness has been both exploited but also misunderstood and underestimated.

If they understand us, more so if they TRUST US, if they are motivated and confident they will do incredible things for us. Fear always overrides fear however, there will never be any fear that overcomes trust- never forget this.

Lest we ever forget, their welfare is our primary responsibility now that we have taken them and made what was once wild domestic.

We must never stop questioning our practices and approaches. We must never stop seeking to give these sentient beings the freedom of choice, and space to exist, to think, to feel, to react…

AS WE DO.

We must be their guardians, the horse have and continue to give humans SO MUCH.

The healing barn initiative has begun, and they are partnered now in this journey to healing.

It’s only then that you’ll find everything that the universe has held onto for you.
