Meet our Trainer!

Martha Alamo is a dog enthusiast and dog mom to her two precious and mischievous Beagle girls whom she loves to train and spend time with.

Martha's career as an adolescent psychiatric nurse and mental health professional took her all over south Florida. She spent over 30 years working with children with severe mental health and behavioral disorders. Through her hard work she became program developer and director of multiple child and adolescent hospital units in Miami Dade, trained law enforcement on Crisis Intervention Techniques and understanding and dealing with youths with mental health and behavioral issues, and worked with the judicial system on drug diversion programs. Martha ended her career as program director for the children's unit at New Horizons of the Treasure Coast.

Her dog training and showing career started with an interest in showing her pet Beagle so she became an involved member of the Miami Obedience Club in the early 2000's. Martha worked as a trainer for her club and obtained numerous titles with her beagle.

After retirement, Martha joined the Indian River Dog Training Club as a member but since has become an instructor. She currently teaches advanced beginner obedience, AKC Canine Good Citizen/Community Canine, and AKC Trick Dog.

Martha an AKC approved evaluator for all CGC levels, Star Puppy, and all levels of Trick Dog. In addition to being an AKC approved judge for AKC Temperament Test and AKC Fetch Dog.

ADL will be offering an AKC Canine Good Citizen Training Class starting in September!

This training course will be a bit different than Great Games for Manners that we have hosted previously. This course goes over 10 commands to ensure that your dog will be a welcomed community member when in public, in other words CGC is preparing your dog for the real world. Martha Alamo, a certified AKC CGC Evaluator will be leading this course. At the end of the course there is a test and if your dog passes they receive their Certified Good Citizen Certificate! The CGC title is a prerequisite for many therapy dog certifications, as well as a great introduction to more advanced dog sports, tricks and activities.

No prior experience is required – we will provide comprehensive training to ensure you have all the skills and knowledge needed to excel in this role.

Responsibilities:
•Supervise and interact with dogs in our care, ensuring their safety and well-being at all times
•Assist with feeding, walking, and administering medications as needed
•Clean and maintain daycare facilities, including indoor and outdoor play areas, restrooms, and common areas
•Engage with pet owners, providing updates and answering questions about their pets' experiences at our daycare
•Participate in training sessions to learn about dog behavior, handling techniques, and basic obedience training methods

Qualifications:
•Must be a sophomore in high school or equivalent
•Passionate about animals, particularly dogs, with a desire to learn and grow in the field of animal care
•Reliable, responsible, and able to follow instructions
•Strong communication skills and a friendly, positive attitude
•Ability to work well independently as well as part of a team

As summer kicks into full swing it is so important to remember that air temperatures, concrete, grass, and asphalt all vary. When the air is 85 degrees, shaded grass is 78 degrees, sunny grass is 88 degrees, concrete is 105 degrees and asphalt is 130 degrees. ALWAYS test the surface you'll be walking your dog on by touching the back of your hand to the sidewalk/road. If it is too hot for you to comfortably hold your hand on for 7 seconds it is too hot to walk your dog on. Walking on hot surfaces leads to swollen, blistered, or burnt paw pads. Let's keep our furry companions safe this summer and limit walks to early mornings and late afternoons.

The Fourth of July is approaching and we’re all excited to grill, hang out and watch some fireworks!
Did you know July 5th is one of the busiest days at shelters and humane societies?
Here are some reminders and tips to ensure your pups stay safe during the fireworks.
BEFORE THE FOURTH
1. If your dog requires medication, reach out to your vet ASAP! They will be increasingly busy leading up to the fourth.
2. Ensure their name tags are up to date with your current information! If they are chipped ensure their chip information is current as well!
3. Secure all exits at your home, including your fence line. Dogs can dig under the fence and escape through small gaps.
4. Have a recent photo of your dog just in case!
ON THE FOURTH
1. Ensure your pet has their collar with their tags on!
2. Make a plan - if they get stressed during fireworks maybe adjust their dinner/potty times to ensure they can comfortably eat/potty before the show starts.
3. Kenneling your dog is also a good way to ensure they stay safe during the show, turning on a fan and a tv or music will help cover the loud noises
4. Give them a frozen Kong filled with peanut butter or treats to keep them occupied.
OTC RECOMMENDATIONS:
Thunder shirts - if unavailable an ACE bandage can be used in a similar manner to wrap them.
CALMING or CBD Treats - Composure, Zesty Paws, and Pet Honesty are some brands that make them. (CBD OIL)
FROZEN KONGS filled with peanut butter/treats or Frozen Veggies are good to keep them occupied
*** ALWAYS CONSULT WITH YOUR VET BEFORE GIVING YOUR DOG ANY MEDICATIONS***
