Silly Dig Sunday😜

🐶Cooper is on his mobility and weight loss journey. He has lost 2 pounds in a week and yesterday walked 10 minutes in the under water treadmill.

🐕Labradors are wonderful dogs that are predisposed to hip and elbow dysplasia. These can be painful mobility limiting conditions that can be hard to manage.

⚖️Weight control and regular structured exercise can help more than you imagine.

🐩Body condition scoring is important and easy to do!!!!

⚖️We typically use the 1-9 scoring system with 5/9 being perfect. Why learning to score your dog is so important is because we are familiar with pudgy dogs and how they look. Ginger here was at one point 5 pounds heavier than she is now. At 5 pounds heavier most people would have thought she looked good.

⏱️We do know that thin dogs like Ginger can have up to 2 years longer life span and up to 2 years later onset of arthritis.

🐶Weight control is the single most important factor in your dog living a longer more mobile life.

🎙️Let’s talk about body awareness and confidence!

🐶As you can see below this little girl is doing a pretty difficult exercise. Both her front and rear feet are on unstable surfaces. You can tell by her body posture she is not comfortable with this exercise.

👀When I see a dog like this it makes me think that she is not ready for unstable equipment at this time. Thats ok!!!!

🐾Rehabilitation and fitness have progressions in exercises. We never start with unstable equipment, there is a progression for every exercise we do.

🐶In this case, she is able to do front feet on unstable surfaces, and the rears on unstable surfaces, just not planking on unstable surfaces yet.

🙂 Our CCRA and mom made a plan to progress to this exercise safely and preventing injury.

🐾Rehabilitation and fitness programs can be powerful for our pets, but they can also cause injuries if not done correctly. If you are seeking guidance for your pet with rehabilitation or fitness please make sure who is offering guidance is certified and trained.

🐶🐾Balance, focus and coordination do not come easy for everyone. Keys to injury prevention and proper body movements is body awareness.

🐾This young lady has elbow dysplasia that can result in compensations on how she moves.

🐶Now that she is feeling better she comes for maintenance to keep her balance, coordination and flexibility up to s***f.

👂Bilateral Age Related Hearing Loss is the technical term.

🦻Like people, our aging affects hearing. It can seem sudden but it is typically slowly progressive.

📣Higher frequencies tend to be lost earlier than lower pitches.

Boo 👻 says Hip Dysplasia is a bummer but with a plan things get easier.

Hip dysplasia is a congenital condition that progresses over time. 👻 Has been coming to TC Animal Rehab for almost 5 years for maintenance and to assist her in slowing down progression.

❓Planning on competing in sports with your dog❓

🐶 Starting with age appropriate training and conditioning is vital.

🐾 It’s tempting to start our sporting dogs ASAP but injury prevention and healthy longevity happens with patience.

🐕‍🦺 This lady is a born herding dog. Innate ability does not mean the proper training, conditioning, and safety are not important.

🐾 Mom brought her in for her fitness screening with hopes in a few years she will be as skilled as her older brother.

Doodle Monday!!!!

This big guy is in rehab for his arthritis 🦴, pneumonia 🫁 and neurological progression 🧠.

🐾 If you can’t tell he is enthusiastic about his sessions. He grabbed his leash and climbed up on the equipment waiting to start.

This vital 3 year old (chronological age 😉) is here for part of his preventative care. He have locating patella’s that do not require surgery but as part of his healthy aging plan he gets regular exercise for his body and mind.

Healthy aging goals are:

1. Delaying disease (arthritis from his abnormal knee caps)

2. Maintaining physical function (keeping him moving with a natural gait and preventing compensatory patterns)

3. Keeping him engaged in regular training for his mind.

🕰️Healthy aging starts before they become seniors.

🧐Instead of thinking of how long can my pet live, we should think about Healthy Aging.

🥅By changing our goals from time to health we can develop a plan.

With a focus on healthy aging we can divide into categories:

🩺 Regular Veterinary care
⚖️ Lean body weight
🏥 Neutering (life span studies show neutered dogs live longer)
🐾 Active life style
🌿 Supplements for healthy aging

Remember, for most of these categories your family veterinarian is most likely your expert in their field. There are many sources for information and having someone who can help you navigate the studies, true research, products and understanding your pet is the most important part of healthy aging. More is not better, what right for your pet is better.

An important part of your dogs healthy and mobility is their nails. 🐶 Trapper is getting a toe nail trim and the hair on his feet shaved so he can walk with better confidence and not slide on his tile floor.

🪽Angel is graduating her Fitness class!!!

She is a wonderfully confident and friendly girl who has elbow dysplasia. After finishing her rehabilitation she continued her progress by attending fitness classes.
