🐶Adaptive postures can occur for many reasons.

🐾Primarily at TCAR we see them when there is a cause of pain (hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, back pain etc)

or

🐾Because of restrictions/lack of active range of motion from previous trauma, congenital conditions, cruciate injuries etc).

🐾This kiddo has hyperextended wrists, atypical should angle and rotation at the ankles when standing.

👀Identifying the underlying cause, improving comfort and normalizing gait and posture as much as possible is how we manage compensation.

⛱Happy First Day of Summer😎

⚖We know that weight loss is hard and that we all need a little help.

☀TCAR is starting our summer weight loss program with a goal oriented approach and the support team to help your furry friend slim down.

🍚Its easy for dogs and cats to gain weight, its hard to take it back off but we know that lean dogs have less chronic diseases and later onset of arthritis.

📲Please call 772-492-6066 to set up your initial consultation to get her going.

🏥Impact of Digit Amputation on Dogs Competing in Agility

🐾This study looked at agility dog performance after toe amputation.

⚡1/3rd of all agility dogs will have an injury
⚡1/4 of those dogs will have multiple injuries

🐾Most common injury was to the shoulder, back, neck and toes.

📝They performed a Retrospective Cross-Sectional study based on owner response.

🐾Most common cause of amputation was injury, infection or cancer.

🐶46 dogs were in the study
⚡30 of the digits were amputated due to trauma
🐾Most common digit was the 5th (pinkie toe)
🐶Most common dog was a Border Collie (very prevalent breed in agility)

🐾84% Returned to sport
🐾41% Returned to previous level of performance

👀Limitations to the study may be owner bias
Suggests that digit amputation in agility dogs is well tolerated.

🐾Rehabilitation for digit amputations can be highly successful and we TCAR can help.

🔍An important part of caring for our pets is knowing where to look when we need answers. It’s very easy to find the answers we want to find, and not always the correct or most helpful answers.

📖We will be sharing resources that are helpful for different conditions and issues we see and manage commonly. Remember, your most powerful resource for your pets medical needs is your veterinarian🩺.

🧠If your pet has a neurological condition southeastveterinaryneurology has a wealth of knowledge on their site for owners.

🧀We know all foods have calories.

🧀We know cheese is high in calories.

🧀We know that dogs need less calories per day than people.

🐶We know lean dogs live longer and have less chronic diseases.

🚫Please remember, there is no Cheese Tax.
