“Many would call it the cutest fish on the reef, the juvenile yellow boxfish (Ostracion cubicum) resembles a yellow dice bobbing to the rhythm of the ocean. As an adult, it can reach 45 centimetres (18 in), but this little baby here was somewhere around 5cm only”

Our PhytoPlasm BrownTM is a mixture of 4 species of microalgae, all known for their nutritional goodness as well as attributes that include antivirals and antioxidants.

The species used in this mix vary in size to feed different size organisms. This mix is what we use to feed OUR large scale production copepods.

We recommend this phyto brown mix to feed copepods, amphipods, planktivorous corals, clams, scallops, featherdusters, zoanthids, and much more!

AlgaGen has pioneered the production of various types of zooxanthellae. The regular use of zooxanthellae will change coral husbandry like no other product on the market! Coral biology defines a relationship between a coral and its population of zooxanthellae. In fact coral health depends on the presence of zooxanthellae. As a matter of biology and in addition to stress events, corals will expel their zooxanthellae. It just happens. Over time the loss of zooxanthellae will lead to potential washed out coloration and decreased coral health. By adding AlgaGen PhycoPure™ Zooxanthellae to your tank, you are providing a chance for your corals to reabsorb this critical element and regain color, health and flourish.

The History of AlgaGen

AlgaGen LLC was founded, and has been operated by one man with a passion for sustainable, aquacultured, phytoplankton and zooplankton since 2002, Erik Stenn. To most, we may seem like a large corporate facility, but in fact, we are just a small group of 3 that share in the same passion and goal. We strive to maintain excellence, and with everyone having a hand in every aspect of the process, raising, orders, quality control, packing, and customer service, it makes it a much more involved and intimate experience. We all play a vital role in ensuring you get the best products available! Erik is our fearless leader, Scott works the copepod room, packs out every order with care, and is our general manager, he has been working here 11 years and was Erik’s first employee! Amber, our newest addition, is a sales representative, handles our administrative tasks, helps pack out, and handles customer service! We work closely together to make sure everyone is 100% satisfied, we stand firmly behind our products, and if ever there is an issue, we will take care of you.

Our plankton have been utilized in countless novel species development projects such as leafy sea dragons, lookdowns, sea horses, palometa, mandarins, angels, tangs, snook, tuna, cod, sturgeon, in addition to various coral and jellyfish propagation projects. We are proud to be a part of such projects and continue to support universities, aquariums, and research facilities, along with our local fish stores! We grow products that are not only good for your marine life, but they are also good for the environment since microalgae consumes carbon dioxide and in turn, produces oxygen!

Our products are much safer than using wild harvested phyto and zooplankton, since they are raised in controlled environments, which means no bacteria, parasitic organisms, or related fish diseases since there are no fish or corals on site. The phytoplankton we culture feeds the copepods, and the wastewater from the copepods feed other production systems. It is considerably more cost effective, which means more savings for you, to grow them here, than to harvest pods and algaes from the wild. We use less fossil fuels to grow plankton than is used to run a boat, with much less pollution! We also maintain strict protocols to insure our products are free of pathogens, and we test on a continual basis, in a laboratory setting.

Some of our prestigious clients include; New England Aquarium, Monterey Aquarium, Georgia Aquarium, Dallas Aquarium, Steinhart Aquarium, Long Island Aquarium, Florida Aquarium, North Carolina Aquarium, Aquarium du Qebec, Educational & Scientific Institutions such as MIT, Harvard, Yale, Stanford Field Station, Carnegie Mellon, Scandia National Labs, National Center of Marine Algae, Mote Marine, University of Miami, FIT, University of Florida, University of Texas, ORA Proaquatix, Smithsonian Marine Station, Harbor Branch, Georgia Institute of Technology, and many more!
