Meet Selby 🐾
We’ve gotten to know Selby and her family quite well since Christmas.
Selby came to us on Christmas Day with GDV (gastric dilatation-volvulus) — a life-threatening condition where the stomach fills with gas and twists, cutting off its own blood supply and requiring immediate emergency surgery. She went straight to surgery and remained hospitalized with us for nearly 36 hours, through the 27th.
One of the most critical concerns with GDV is damage to the stomach tissue due to loss of blood flow. Unfortunately, Selby’s stomach tissue showed significant bruising and inflammation — what we often describe as very “angry” tissue.
On December 30th, Selby became febrile and returned to us. After an overnight stay with no improvement, an exploratory surgery was recommended to evaluate the original surgical site. During surgery, we discovered that a compromised portion of the stomach had ruptured due to the prior tissue damage. This allowed stomach contents to leak into her abdomen, creating a very serious situation.
Since then, Selby has been hospitalized for over 70 hours during this stay, receiving intensive supportive care. She currently has a nasogastric feeding tube, as she is not yet eating on her own. Because of this, she also requires IV antibiotics until she is able to take medications orally.
The good news? Selby is improving every day. 💪
We are all rooting for her to start eating on her own, and she can certainly use all the continued good thoughts, prayers, and positive vibes sent her way.
Pictured is a moment that truly captures how invested our entire team has been — and honestly, if we are this invested, imagine how her family has felt. After her second surgery, Selby’s dad (her main man and best friend) stayed at the clinic overnight just to be close in case anything changed. Because of the incredible bond between them, we created a small setup so they could rest together.
A candid photo was captured in the early hours of the New Year (ok’d by dad to share) — both Selby and her dad finally getting some much-deserved rest.
When dad headed home the following morning, Miles proudly stepped in to take over monitoring duties and provide comfort. 🐱💙
Selby, your team — two-legged and four-legged — is cheering you on every step of the way. 🐾✨
