Because fresh forage is less plentiful in the wintertime, horses often subsist on diets composed largely of dry matter such as hay, grain, and nongrowing forage. The amount of dry matter consumed has a direct bearing on water requirements. Hay, grain, and nongrowing forage typically contain less than 15% moisture. In contrast, growing forages possess 60-80% moisture. Therefore, when horses are consuming winter rations, which are often chock full of dry matter, water requirements increase substantially.

Read more about your horse's winter water requirements in the article https://bit.ly/3OL9o9m

As winter approaches in many areas of the world, horsemen must evaluate the nutrient requirements of their horses.

๐ŸŒŸ KERx Product Spotlight at AAEP: ReSolvin EQโ„ข ๐ŸŒŸ

Dietary supplementation of fatty acids, particularly EPA, DHA, and GLA, has been a key focus of research efforts due to their positive effects in the body. Virtually every blood cell features membranes composed of fatty acids, and these membranes are extremely responsive to dietary supplementation.

In a study performed by Kentucky Equine Research, long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) supplementation increased levels of EPA, DHA, GLA, DGLA, and AA, unlike short-chain PUFA supplementation, and was associated positively with the prevention or resolution of severe squamous gastric ulceration.

As the temperatures drop, horse owners are likely stocking up on hay for the winter. Hay dealers typically offer a variety of hays, including the yellowish or brownish varieties that might have been harvested past their prime. Although this hay might not be as green as hay baled under optimal conditions, there are many benefits to late-cut hays.

Learn more about the benefits of late-cut hay in the article https://bit.ly/3CDCvZH

All hays and even cuts of hay from the same field vary depending on the weather conditions in which they were grown and harvested.
