I’m sorry to let everyone know that our hearts are heavier and our laps are lighter after the loss of our dear Tonya. She has been battling mouth cancer for the last few months and is now at peace. She filled our days with cuddles and smiles. If you see Porch Kitty she may need an extra pet or two.

The boxes are mostly unpacked and we will be open for business Monday July 10th at 8am. The most wonderful group of family and friends that got us here are so loved and appreciated. The staff are all superheroes and I hope they love their space. You can call our regular number, but be prepared for a few extra rings as we had to call forward until the number moves over permanently on the 18th. Or if you want to skip the extra rings, call 607-788-1892 this week to get us.

October is National Pet Wellness Month...

It has been said that knowledge is power, and in many cases, this is certainly true. According to a recently published study, one of these cases is cat ownership, and how it is perceived by cat owners.

Using an anonymous online survey of adult cat owners in the Unites States, researchers polled respondents about their knowledge of cat behavior and environmental needs (i.e., enrichment via provision of dedicated playtime and intermittently changing environment to explore), current trends in cat care, behavioral problems in their cats, and about how closely bonded they are to their cats. They then looked for correlations between the owners' knowledge of this broad spectrum of feline care issues, reported behavioral problems, and how closely owners are bonded to their cats.

The results of this informative study suggest, among other things, that owners with a more accurate understanding of cat behavior and who more regularly address their cats' environmental needs reported a lower incidence of feline behavioral problems and a closer bond with their cats. Owners who agreed with misconceptions about feline behavior and/or who reported provision of less interactive environmental enrichment for their cats were more likely to use negative reinforcement (i.e., punishment, which we know does not generally work in cats) to address their cats' behavioral problems and reported a higher incidence of behavioral problems and a weaker emotional bond with their cats.

Taken together, the results of this study point out the importance of educating cat owners about feline behavior and the importance of environmental enrichment for their cats in assuring the best perceived outcomes with respect to cat ownership. Such an improved perception of cat ownership by cat owners is also more likely to result in a higher quality of life for their cats.
