Idaho 2024 is a wrap. We had exceptional dog work on Chukars and Huns. We walked around 130 miles in 14 days of hunting, 6 days of driving, a little over 200 birds taken. Aspen vom Wachtelkonig(10 months), Yasmine III vom Jagdkonig(7 months) and Hootie vom Kiefernbach really had an outstanding trip.

20 covey day, yesterday and today. It was the Darcy and Dottie show again yesterday. Today it was the Hootie show. You know you have dang good puppies when they are out of site and go on point 209 yards out and you completely trust them to hold point until you get there. And they do it over and over every time.

Another hell of a day today. It was the Darcy, Dottie and Hootie show again with each of them finding 6 coveys by 12:00. Point of the day goes to Hootie pic below. She had a really nice point on a covey of Huns with the backdrop of the snowy mountains. I just stood there for about 5 minutes soaking it all in before walking in for the covey rise.

It’s all over every bird hunting FB page anyway but if you’re a bird hunter Idaho is the place to be right now. Originally we were headed to Nevada but on the way out someone told me to go to Idaho instead. Aspen vom Wachtelkonig(Darcy) had 7 different covey points in less than an hour today. Hootie had 6 and Jasmine III vom Jagdkonig (Dottie)had 4. Point of the day goes to Dottie in a covey of Huns the she relocated on several times before pinning them down. The future looks bright for Vom Wachtelkonig kennels with these 3 young females!

Paid my dues yesterday and was rewarded today! Darcy(10 months) and Hootie(1 1/2) were the rock stars today with 7 and 6 covey points each. Gotta love the western states. Dottie the 7 month old pup had 2 covey points as well.

Well the bird gods were not smiling on us yesterday. Got a heavy snow overnight and couldn’t get to where we wanted to go, so we called an audible. Well we broke down 60 miles from any type of cell service back in the chukar mountains and 100 miles from the nearest town with a tow truck. Broke every type of tie rod there was, the drag link, track bar and lower sleeve. Plus ruined the brand new tires that were just put on the front. Fixed by noon today and had some good points to end the day on a high.

I highly recommend if you have an IPhone download the newest update and setup the satellite texting and location finder. I was able to text via satellite at no charge to get the tow truck to us. Sipsey and Darcy pointing a covey this afternoon in the pic below.

Took an extra 1/2 day to get to chukar country due to a small snow storm in Wyoming on I-80 that shut it down for a few hours… but we got into em on a very short hunt. I remember now why I haven’t been back since 2017…. And I’ll feel it in the morning.

Had a good time running these 2 knuckle heads, Epik vom Kurbis Haken and Hootie vom Kiefernbach at the Pinckneyville,IL HZP test this past weekend. This is the site of next years Armbruster. We used 1 set of fields and water on Saturday and a different set of fields and water for Sunday as prep for next year. We had several high scoring dogs both days.

Many thanks to Rhonda Feazel, Jim Halleran and the Judges for giving up their weekend to “do dog stuff”. Hootie finished with a 186 and Epik went 193.

Headed to Demopolis this weekend, Ames Plantation next weekend, and the Sandhills of NC the following weekend to do some judging. Then headed back out west to get revenge on some chukar.

Day 57 - Made it home about 1:00am this morning. Felt really good to hit the ole shower and bed. Seems like I just left the other day, not at the end of July. Lots of good memories were had with new and old friends. The two young puppies Darcy and Dottie probably have more experience on wild birds than most peoples dogs have in their lifetime.

Only had a few mishaps along the way. Darcy got hit by a porky, but only about 15 quills, so we got lucky on that one. She also needed about 4 staples on her upper front leg when she snag herself on some old barbed wire. Blew a radiator hose on the truck on the side of the interstate on the way to the Armbruster. The worst was when we were about an hour from home last night and we have a blowout on the trailer. But the highs of puppies getting on wild birds far outweighs the few things that went wrong.

We found birds everyday but they were significantly down from the previous 2 years of record highs. The dogs had some really good days and also bumped a few birds along the way but that is why we are out there.

Ended the trip by picking Tricia up at the airport in Minneapolis and spent the last 5 days judging at the Armbruster.

Passing the torch on to the newest member of the crew. Lexie(12 1/2years) backing 4 1/2 month old Dottie pointing a covey of Huns. Lexie doesn’t get very many points these days. She got coonhound paralysis a couples years back and can’t run anymore.

Nice covey point of Huns on this fantastic Monday morning.
