Hi there… My name is Sandra Porter-Gonyea. I started grooming in my teen years so as of 2020 I have been in the industry for about 47 years. I tried to quit a few times but kept coming back. I was born to do this. Part of my career in caring for pets has been having an understanding about dog/cat health and being able to notice problems on the grooming table and bring an awareness of health to the pet owners I service. I own a successful mobile grooming business, am a Certified Feline Master Groomer, a Reiki Practitioner, and a Certified Raw Food Consultant, as well as a Certified Pet Tech CPR & First Aid Instructor. Being a Pet Tech professional gives me validation and skills to take my pet care to the next level.
Also, with the changes happening quickly in the grooming industry, I feel it is imperative that all groomers have a health and safety background. Pet owners are now demanding regulation and being able to teach groomers and other pet professionals about pet health and safety puts the pet professionals I teach ahead of the game.
Pet owners are more discriminating as ever and seek out the best knowledge and understanding to do the best they can for their pets. Knowing CPR and First Aid skills can mean the difference between life and death for a sick or injured pet.
Another, bigger reason is because of a little calico kitten named “Harley”. Harley was about 6 months old eating her dry food when an older cat that bullied her ,jumped on her. I witnessed this and immediately knew she was in trouble. She inhaled the dry food and couldn’t breathe. I never felt so helpless in all my life. I tried many different things to try and save her. My lack of knowledge developed in to hysteria as she died in my arms. I never ever want to experience that feeling ever again. And if I can prevent another pet owner from experiencing that pain, I want to be able to do this through my classes and instruction. We all should know this. Scary things happen. Knowing what to do and the steps to take will go a long way in servicing your clients, your own pets, and the industry itself.
