We're having to do chores earlier than usual in order to accommodate clients picking up their puppies. In doing so, sometimes the puppies are pretty wore out by pick-up time. But rest assured, this is what they are like in full go! This video was taken this morning.
Niki just has two black male puppies (with collars) left to send to their new homes. The remaining are Kit's. Kit's puppies start to go to their new homes on Tuesday.

Juneau's at it again. Picking apples. They're not ripe enough for us, but the dogs are happy with them!
The evening of moving Kit's puppies outside we had a drenching rain and even some hail roll through. Living in the Rocky Mountains it happens. I was sitting under the kennel shelter with Kit's puppies to be certain they were safe, dry, and not scared. Everybody did great!
Moved Outside
After a week of taking Kit's puppies outside every couple of hours to potty, yesterday at four weeks old, they were moved outside after they started escaping their whelping box when they had to potty. Once we got into their kennel, Shelby (Kit and Niki's younger sister), decided she wanted to stay in the kennel and puppy-sit them.
In this video, mama Kit also got a drink of water. This is the first introduction to water for the puppies.
The puppies are much happier in the bigger space of their kennel! More room to run, play, and potty.

Kit and Kenai's babies are 3 1/2 weeks old now! They get to go outside several times a day to potty, eat, and nurse from mama. This video is after all that, so they don't last long once they are satisfied.

Niki and Kenai's puppies are four weeks old today! They are doing great!!!
We have been transitioning them all week to their move outside. I had them out all day yesterday. We brought them in last night since they are not yet used to the 53 degree nighttime temperatures.
We will bring them back inside when it gets to hot outside this weekend too.

A couple of nights after Kit had her litter of puppies, I had finally felt it was safe to sleep in my own bed as long as the baby monitor was on so I could listen for puppies in distress. I heard Kit get up to get a drink of water and l eat, but what I didn't hear was her going out the doggie door.
I got up to check and from what I could tell she went to the back door, then went to Niki's whelping box then promptly urinated on my double sheets protecting my wall to wall carpeting. I dried it the best I could, sprayed it, and then got the carpet cleaner out. While I was cleaning I had plenty of time to try to figure out why it happened.
You see, because our girls are outside they get a crash course of house training while they need to repeatedly go in and out of the house during labor and delivery. What I failed to realize was that each time Kit needed to go in or out she either went through the sliding door with us or through the doggie door following Niki. She never really actually learned to go through herself.
It had reminded me of a story I had read years ago written by a trainer and that I often share with clients. If your puppy has an accident in the house, roll up a newspaper and whack yourself on the head repeating, "I will watch the puppy. I will watch the puppy!" With that in mind after two hours of cleaning, I woke Rob up at 3:00am and asked him to get up and help me train Kit while one of us distracted Niki keeping her out of the way. It wasn't Kit's fault, it was ours. That was the one and only accident in the house.
The next morning we were blessed to have Arlo! So of course another opportunity to share another video, this time with Kit and her puppies as Arlo says goodbye.
Yesterday we were blessed to be able to watch our 18 month old grandson, Arlo. He has got the most gentle and loving soul and absolutely adores all animals! Here is a short video of him with Niki and her puppies. Helping Arlo repeatedly go into both mama's whelping boxes I am reminded of how absolutely wonderful our dogs are here at Zumi's Labs! Neither of the mama's were fazed by the intrusion but welcomed Arlo's gentle touches with their new puppies.
Rob and I had quite the scare last night. I was sleeping next to the whelping box containing Kit and her precious newborn puppies when I woke around 4:15am to find one puppy flatten, pinned, and completely concealed under Kit's shoulder. I scooped her up and immediately worked to resuscitate her fearing the worst as she was not breathing. Fortunately with vigorous rubbing and stimulation I finally got a gasp for air. I knew there could be life, but she needed to breathe. With the puppy's infrequent and very few gasps for air, I called Rob on the phone to have him grab the oxygen tank I had stored just a few hours earlier thinking we were done needing it on standby. It took a good half an hour before I was finally able to get her to breathe normally and she was able to nurse. But she made it! Today I canāt tell which one she is.
Whelping with new mamas can be challenging. Even with great maternal instincts they tend not to realize their 70 pound bodies can easily crush a 15.9 ounce newborn. Overcome with exhaustion after more than 24 hours of labor and delivery combined seven tiny newborns, it's easy to lose track of them. We feel blessed to have been able to save this one! Another few nights by the whelping box for me.
This short video is the five day size difference between Niki and Kit's puppies. 1lb 13ozs vs 15.9ozs. Almost double the size in five days!
Now in two days. Kit (out of Tika and Griz and full sister to Niki) is very precious!
Niki, our fifth generation chocolate girl, blessed us on this 4th of July with seven puppies! 3 chocolate males, 3 black males, and 1 chocolate female. Out of our sire Kenai, the son of the #1 male Labrador Retriever in Canada for 2017!
Kit, Niki's full sister, is due with her litter by Kenai on the 8th!

We were blessed to be able to watch Arlo again yesterday! We were also blessed to have water in our seasonal pond, with overflow! Arlo really enjoyed playing in the runoff that goes across our driveway while Rob played with the pack in the pond. Niki, who is due with her first litter of puppies in a week, was being very maternal with Arlo and stayed close to him while he played.
