Horses Helping People Help Themselves

The rhythmical, three dimensional movement of the horse at a walk stimulates movement to the rider that is similar to human walking. The total development of the rider, including their social, emotional, cognitive and motor skills, are enhanced through interactions with the horses, the volunteers and the outdoors.

🌟🐴 This month at The Riding Therapy Center, our riders have been working hard to master a challenging new skill: the rope gate! 🐴🌟

Over the past few weeks (weather permitting!), our riders have shown incredible determination and growth as they practiced each step to success. They began by stopping their horses at poles and placing rings on hooks, slowly building their focus and precision. From there, they progressed to unhooking the rope and, with steady hands and strong riding skills, maneuvered their horses to open the gate and place the rope on another hook.

🤠 We are beyond proud of their hard work and dedication! Many riders exceeded all expectations, mastering the entire rope gate in just one lesson! This activity tested their coordination, fine motor skills, patience, and communication with their equine partners, and they rose to the challenge with flying colors.

🎉 Join us in celebrating these amazing accomplishments as our riders continue to achieve more milestones each week. It's all thanks to their hard work, the guidance of our staff and volunteers, and, of course, our incredible therapy horses!

🌟🐴 Meet Scout, The Riding Therapy Center’s Horse of the Week! 🐴🌟

🏇 Scout is a registered American Quarterhorse (AQHA) officially named Mychexaremyassets. Born in Iowa in June of 2013 to Protect Your Assets (sire) and Copy This Chex (dam), this 11-year-old gelding brings both youth and experience to our program.

🤠 With a background as a Western Pleasure Horse and previous hunter-jumping experience, Scout’s solid build and calm temperament make him an excellent partner for our older, more advanced riders. His versatility and training are already making a positive impact, and he’s quickly becoming a favorite around the center.

🙌 We are incredibly grateful to our donors and sponsors, especially those from the 2024 Mudbug Barn Dance, whose generosity made it possible for us to bring Scout into our herd last year. Financial support, through initiatives like our Horse Heroes program, ensures we can provide exceptional care for all of our horses, from newcomers like Scout to our retired and aging equine partners.

Though she has only been with us for just over 6 months, she has already captured the hearts of our riders, instructors, and volunteers alike. Standing at a petite 14.2 hands tall (a little under 5 feet), Rain proves that greatness comes in all sizes.

🌈 Previously loved by a family with young children who rode her daily, Rain brought her gentle spirit and determination to our program without missing a beat. 🌟 This week, we’re shining the spotlight on a staff favorite here at The Riding Therapy Center – the one and only Tanto!

🎉 Tanto, an American Paint Horse, joined the world in 2008 and became part of The RTC family in February 2017. Over the years, Tanto has captured the hearts of our staff, riders, and volunteers with his gentle spirit, adaptability, and goofy antics. Whether he’s working with young lead-line riders or helping independent riders refine their skills, Tanto never fails to make every lesson special.

🐴 Tanto has an incredible ability to connect with his riders, making them feel safe, confident, and empowered. For our independent riders, he’s a steadfast partner, guiding them as they grow and master new skills. For our younger and less experienced riders, Tanto’s calm demeanor and steady steps are the perfect introduction to the world of horses.

First day back to school today, so we celebrated with puzzles! They’re fun and they help us practice fine motor skills and matching!

We start each lesson with a quick warm-up to prepare our riders for their lesson ahead. Exercises like cross body low fives help strengthen core muscles used to help maintain balance while riding which can transfer to better coordination during everyday life.
