We are often asked, "How long will my Basset live?" or "How much will my basset weigh?" or "How old are they in human years?". I am going to try to answer these questions to the best of my knowledge. The average Basset Hound lives 12 - 13 years, and weighs between 40 and 65 pounds according to the AKC. Our bassets tend to be on the 40-55 pounds size, and the boys always tend to outweigh the girls. As for age compared to human years, this is a little more difficult. It is based on weight. The larger the breed the shorter they live. For a basset hound weighing 21 to 50 pounds, at 1 year of age is about 15 in human years. By age 2, they are already 24 in people years. Age 3 ... 28 human years; Age 4 ... 32 people years; Age 5 ... 36 human years; Age 6 in dog years equals 42 people years; and by the age of 7 they are already 47 of our years; by their age of 8 they are 51 human years; 9 doggie years is 56 owner years; 10 years for our beloved pets put them at age 60 in people terms; Age 11 bring them up to 65; age 12 is already 69; Age 13 for our dogs is like being 74 to us; if you are lucky to still have your companion at age 14 they will be 78 in people terms; And finally by age 15 they are a whopping 83 in human years! If your basset or dog is a little larger, then at age 6 they age a little faster. I hope this has answered the questions, and put to rest the old saying that 1 dog year is actually equal to 7 of our years that started back in the 1950's.

As of 10/28/2024, Lady and Cooper are parents to 14 Bloodhounds! 6 boys and 8 girls All are between 10.3 ounces and 1 pound 1 ounce. This was quite a load! All are Black/Tan and Liver/Tan. Pictures taken @ 1 day.

Since we have some time before our girls deliver, I am looking for some ideas. We love our hounds long ears, but they do cause some problems! Does anyone have the magic answer to the water bowl situation. Everytime they get water, it is a mess with wet ears. We have tried several advertised bowls, but they seem to always have at least one wet ear after drinking!

This is part 2 from my family in Dutton, AL. This is her 2nd deYampert basset, Pappy's little sister. Her parents were Lila and Liam (Goose). This is what they had to say, " We love love her she isn’t a calm baby loves to aggravate her older big brother Pappy to the point he begs to go outside to lay on the porch where she can’t get to him. lol. Thank you so much for picking her for me…". She gets her energy from Liam AKA Goose. He is a very busy basset!

I have a family from Dutton, AL that has 2 deYampert Hounds. Poppy, DOB 11/5/17 whose parents are Leroy and Lula. She stated, "Love him so much bought our 2nd one Mabel last month. Wouldn’t use anyone else as a breeder for my hounds." In her pictures, on the top right, you can see Mabel with her BIG brother.
