Retired K9 Bono Update 🐕

“Bono has had another positive week. He should finish up another medication by Monday. He's starting to put on a little bit of weight and maintain it. He's feeling spry, finding his way into our bed. What a difference from weeks back.

Bono also received a beautiful quilt from "Quilts for K9," thanks to Jacque Prelzer. He is a blanket hound for sure, so I know he appreciates the kind gift. Bono is enjoying his weekend, and he hopes you do too.”

Recently our foundation assisted retired K9 Bono with approximately $28,000 in medical expenses and care due to a medical emergency. We thank each of our supporters and sponsors for giving Bono a fighting chance!

🐕 Retired K9 Bono Update 💥

“Bono had a good week, albeit an upset tummy here and there. He is enjoying his upped meal plans and handling his injections well. We are down to three (3) medicines and hope to have those continue to dwindle down with time.

He's in good spirits and has started to regain some of his playfulness. He is also becoming a bit mischievous, as he tried to steal the hamburger spatula while I was trying to clean the grill. Yesterday, he was able to spend some time in the pasture, pausing long enough for a break or two.

Thank you to everyone who continues to pray for and support Bono. We wouldn't be here if not for you all. Bono wants everyone to have a great week, as Monday has crept upon us too quickly.”

Bono is continuing to improve!

🐕 K9 Bono Update 🐕 Thankful for all

“Bono had his first checkup yesterday. He wasn't really excited about being back at the vet, nor the muzzle he donned. His staples were removed, but he still has another 4 or 5 days of wearing a cone while his incision heals fully. He also received an injection of B-12, which was another experience in itself.

Bono's blood work continues to look better. His white cell count is now in the normal range, which is great news. His biopsy results were back. He does not have cancer, but he does have a form of doggy IBS (irritable bowel syndrome). The IBS wasn't determined, at this time, to be a long-term issue. It is possible the surgeries have brought the condition on and could be managed by diet.

Some of his medications were continued for the next 6 weeks, but we have also been able to finish up a few of the short-term meds. He also came home with more B-12 injections to continue. The doctors want to leave him on a prescribed food plan for a little bit to help his stomach process all the nutrients. He still has exercise restrictions for a little bit but continues to progress forward.

Bono is continuing to heal, every day acting more like his old self. He has another checkup in a few weeks to monitor his internals. Thank you to everyone who has supported and continues to support Bono. As always, Bono wants everyone to have a great and safe weekend.”

Our foundation has paid and will pay for all of K9 Bono’s medical expenses. Several weeks ago Bono suffered a medical emergency which resulted in approximately two weeks of staying at the vet and needing two surgeries. The total cost of Bono’s medical expenses that have been paid is over $27,000. We thank all our supporters, sponsors, likes, shares, prayers and positive helping Bono having a fighting chance.

The Backpack Bash giveaway is still scheduled to take place Saturday, July 20 at 6:00 pm. However, this event is now a DRIVE THRU ONLY event due to the potential heavy rain forecasted. Participants need to enter V-Plex at the traffic light and proceed to the upper parking lot. Tents will be marked for elementary, middle and high school backpacks. Volunteers will bring the backpacks to your vehicle.

K9 Bono Update 🐕 Keep fighting good boy 💪

“Bono's Thursday was positive. He decided he wanted to eat a little bit of food unassisted. His blood work looks good, with his white blood cell count continuing to drop. The doctors are still waiting on some other results to come in, but Bono is moving forward.

He seemed happy to see me, although I could tell he was tired. Our visit today wasn't as long as I'd like, but he does need rest. Two surgeries in less than two weeks will wear a good boy down. He still wanted his pets, nudging me when I'd stop. This was reassuring.

Bono has seemed to gather himself a following inside the vet office. He seems to be loved by all who care for him, which is also reassuring. I could hear their nicknames for him as they brought him to see me. I do not have any doubts he is getting nothing but the best care and treatment.

Please continue to keep Bono in your thoughts and prayers. He's still has a war in front of him, but he's winning the battles.”

K9 Bono Update

“Bono is responding well to his new medication combo. His white blood cell count has gone down by a significant margin. The biopsy results will be delayed, possibly until 2 weeks. He is using the bathroom, and they have been feeding him via his NG tube. His blood work looks good overall. He is on a jugular IV, mainly due to scar tissue. They are very optimistic about his recovery. They did say he is a bit "grumpy" at the moment, which is understandable. The doctor believed it would be best if I did not visit him today, giving him a little more time to rest without bringing his emotions up.

Today has been a good day for Bono. Please continue to pray for him. We are hopeful he is back home soon.”

Retired K9 Bono Post Surgery Update 🐕 Tired and Still Fighting

“Just spoke to the surgeon. The good news is the colon did not have any tears, and overall sepsis was mild. The stomach was restitched back to the inner linings, just as a precaution. The doctors did conduct a biopsy, which we will not know the results of until tomorrow.

They're going to manage his pain and see what adjustments can be made to his medications to help him heal. The overall recovery time from this surgery is in the 11 to 14 day range, but if we can figure out what the issues are and what medication combo that works for him, he will be home sooner than the last surgery.

The bad news is simply, at this time, we don't know why he is having the issues he is having. I'm hoping for a lot of clarity in the next day, staying the course and getting him home, ultimately.

Even though we didn't get a definitive answer after Bono's surgery, I'm still grateful he did not have to have a portion of his colon removed. I have all faith in Bono healing and coming home soon. I'm very appreciative of the doctors and staff at Dogwood Veterinary Specialty and Emergency for all the great care Bono has received. Also to Kyle at the Georgia Police K9 Foundation for never giving up on Bono and giving him the opportunity to come home to us.”

Retired K9 Bono Update

“Bono had to return to the emergency vet last night. He was very lethargic, with no energy, and no appetite. This morning, the doctors observed his white blood cell count to be extremely elevated, especially post operation day 11. He does have a large amount of gas buildup, which can also cause some concern.

They are going to do CT scans today to see if more surgery is needed or if a few more days of IV and NG assistance can fix it. There does not seem to be a lot of fluid built up, which can be a positive sign that a few more days of management without surgery may work. But, they won't know until later today.

I thank y'all for all you do in supporting Bono. He could use some prayers at the moment. I'm still hopeful we can get him back home soon. The doctors have said he's a fighter and strong willed, which works in our favor.”

Our foundation will be covering all medical bills for Bono which has exceeded $12,000. Thank you for giving Bono a fighting chance!

Retired K9 Bono Update 😔

“Today brought about some new challenges. Bono has developed colic and has an excessive amount of air inside his stomach. He was in noticeable pain, which required aspiration. There was some relief to see his stomach processing food properly, observed from the x-rays. There will be more tests throughout the day.

Unfortunately, he was sedated for comfort during my visit. The emergency room was very busy, but the doctor was kind enough to let me see him very briefly.
He was asleep, so I did not want to wake him. I was able to pet the bridge of his snout and thanked the doctor and staff for allowing me a quick moment in the midst of chaos.

Bono is in good hands, and tomorrow is a new day. Although this is not the news I wanted to receive, I am thankful at how far we have come.”
