History

In 1970 Dr. Don Walsh opened the Ellisville Veterinary Clinic located on Clarkson Rd. Dr. Walsh saw both small animals and horses. The mixed practice continued to grow over the next 15 years. In 1985 Dr. Walsh decided to split the practice and Dr. Carter Smith purchased the small animal practice and continued on Clarkson Rd as, Ellisville Veterinary Hospital. Dr. Walsh moved the equine practice to his new large barn that sat on land that was the 1840’s Kreinkamp homestead, which inspired Dr. Walsh to name the new practice, Homestead Equine Hospital. Dr. Walsh was now able to travel making farm calls and servicing a much larger area allowing the practice to continue to rapidly grow. Dr. Mark Cassells and Dr. Derek Craig were later hired. In January of 2009 Dr. Cassells and Dr. Craig purchased the hospital from Dr. Walsh, After 30 years of being stuffed into the original office with 4 Vets and 10 employees, we moved to the new location. July 7th 2014 was the first day open at the new hospital on Whispering Hope Drive in Villa Ridge, Mo. The new facility enables us to provide the best state of the art care for all our patients both small and large animal, while enabling us to grow and better serve the community. Our Mission Statement
To provide comprehensive, high quality veterinary medicine, with exceptional client service and patient care and an emphasis on client education. Our Hospital Philosophy
To treat our clients as our family and convey that we value their continued trust and goodwill. Courtesy and patience with clients and their pets is our top priority. We find it important give back to our community and make it our responsibility to lessen our carbon foot print, by recycling and conserving energy.

Today is International Cat Day!

Here are 5 fun facts about our fur friends..

1. Kittens have 26 deciduous, or "baby" teeth. As adults cats have 30 permanent teeth. Don't forget to take care of those pearly whites with regular dental cleanings!

2. The whiskers on a cat aren’t just cute, they serve a very important function in assisting cats with getting around, especially at night. Whiskers are embedded deep in the cat’s body and are connected to the cat’s sensitive muscular and nervous systems, acting as touch receptors (or a “kitty radar”). Whiskers allow a cat to detect and respond to changes in their surroundings.

3. A female cat can become pregnant as young as 4 - 6 months of age. Spaying and neutering your cat around this age is the best way to prevent any unexpected litters and help reduce cat overpopulation.

4. Ever wondered why your feline friend would often put their rear end by your face? This is actually a sign of trust and your cat signaling that they feel safe and secure around you.

5. Cats can jump 5 times their own height. Now that’s impressive!

Here's a picture of "Rocky", owned by Dr. Derek and Aarah Craig!
Post a picture of your cat below to celebrate!

🐱 August is National Pet Immunization Awareness Month 🐶

Giving your pets their regular vaccinations is the key to a long and healthy life. Regardless of whether you keep your dog inside or not, vaccines are essential in ensuring your pet's health.

Additionally, places you may frequently visit such as boarding kennels, dog parks and grooming salons are high-risk environments.

Celebrate National Immunization Awareness Month by booking an appointment with your vet to make sure your furry friend is healthy and up to date on all their vaccinations!

☀️ Tips to keep your dog safe during the summer heat ☀️

-- Check the pavement before walks.
We suggest planning your walks early morning to avoid peak sun times when the ground can be dangerously hot and burn your pet's paw pads. If you can, stick to walking in grass. Keep an eye for them lifting paws quickly or limping. If that occurs, its possible its to hot for their paws.

-- Limit outdoor exercise
Your pup may think playing fetch for hours in the sun sounds like a great plan, but on hot summer days try to limit their exercise time and intensity. High-energy dogs and those that love to play have a hard time knowing when they’ve had enough. They rely on you to make responsible choices for them. Try moving the fun inside — playing fetch with a soft toy inside or hide-and-seek with treats are great ways for your pup to burn physical and mental energy in a cool environment.

-- Your brachiocephalic breeds such as Bulldogs, Pekingese's, and Pugs, are at an increased risk for breathing issues when its hot out. They cannot cool down as efficiently and are higher risk for heat strokes.

-- Never leave your dog in the car.
There is no safe amount of time for a dog to remain in a hot car.

-- Ensure your dog has access to plenty of shade and fresh water.

-- Signs of heat stroke.
High temperature, excessive panting, rapid heart rate, red gums, and excessive drooling. They may look limp or droopy, like their tired. This is a medical emergency and should be taken to the vet right away!

Did you know that according to a study conducted by the American Veterinary Medical Association, dogs are 2.5 times more likely and cats are a whopping 21.4 times more likely to be returned to their home from a shelter if they have a registered microchip?

Microchips are injected under the skin using a hypodermic needle. It is no more painful than a typical injection, although the needle is slightly larger than those used for injection. No surgery or anesthesia is required—a microchip can be implanted during a routine veterinary office visit. If your pet is already undergoing anesthesia for a procedure, such as neutering or spaying, the microchip often can be implanted while they're still under anesthesia.

We register your microchip for you! All you have to do is keep your registration information up-to-date.
If you've moved, or if any of your information (especially your phone number or address) has changed, make sure you update your microchip registration as soon as possible.

If you are looking to get your pet microchipped, wondering if your pet has already been microchipped, or looking to answer any additional questions regarding microchipping, do not hesitate to contact us here at Homestead!

03/15/2024

Every horse owner’s idea of paradise is to see their horse grazing on a lush green field; however, there are a number of serious issues that should be considered prior to allowing grazing on rich grass.

If your horses have been confined during the winter, you will need to transition them slowly to spring pastures. It is best to wait until pastures have grown to a minimum of 6 inches before grazing so that the plants have adequate time to recover from winter and grow new leaf tissue.

Once the pastures are ready to graze, begin with short grazing periods for the first few days (15-30 minutes per day). Slowly increase the grazing periods by an additional 15-30 minutes per day until the horse is grazing for 3-4 hours daily. Continue this grazing period for another week or two before changing over to your desired daily turnout time. If possible, time your turnout periods after feeding hay or grain so that the horse is not very hungry when it is offered grass.

While allowing free-choice grazing on lush pasture seems like the ideal situation for owners to provide their horses, the consequences can be deadly. Limiting intake by allowing short durations of grazing or by using a grazing muzzle are unfortunately necessary measures which must be taken for at-risk horses. Ultimately significant weight gain, colic, and laminitis are potential outcomes of all-you-can-eat grazing.

It is best to speak with a veterinarian about the overall body-condition, energy needs, and metabolic status of your horse and what type of grazing is indicated when developing a turn-out program.
