Euthanasia may be the most humane way to end a pet's suffering if they are in pain and suffering. Some signs that your pet may be experiencing pain include:
Breathing
Rapid, shallow, or labored breathing
Lack of appetite
A natural part of dying, as metabolism slows and energy requirements fall off
Pain
Hiding, panting, immobility, or defecating/urinating without attempting to get up
Changes in behavior
Avoidance of favorite activities, irregular behavior patterns, higher than normal anxiety level, seeking out unusual places to sleep or hide, or no longer enjoying or seeking out contact with family.

When I met Jackie for the first time, she was brought into the clinic by a good samaritan who found her sick. Despite her young age of one year old, she had been infected with the parvovirus. Unfortunately, the treatment for this illness was not within the budget of the kind person who had brought her in, so she became my responsibility.

I remember that shy moment when she came over to me, looking for a head pat. Luckily, Jackie was a fighter and beat the parvovirus to become my loving companion for the next 15 years. However, as she grew older, she developed severe arthritis and kidney failure.

One day, I realized that it was time to say goodbye when I took her to her favorite park, and she showed no interest in exploring. Although my husband disagreed about the right time to say goodbye, we kept her comfortable and waited for a few more weeks. Finally, as a family, we said our final goodbyes to Jackie, laying her on a blanket under a tree in our front yard with her loved ones surrounding her. She passed away peacefully.

It can be challenging to know when it's time to say goodbye to a beloved pet. But as a veterinarian, I am here to help you answer any questions you may have about your pet's illness and provide resources for assessing your pet's quality of life.

About Dr Melody Catt
I am a small and exotic animal veterinarian in Vincennes, Indiana. I completed my veterinary degree at Purdue University in 2000 and have been practicing as a veterinarian for 24 years. Also, I hold certification in providing peaceful euthanasia of companion animals through CAETA (Companion Animal Euthanasia Training Academy). After graduation, I practiced in Evansville, Indiana for 5 years before moving back to Vincennes. I now practice at Vincennes Veterinary Clinic.
I am married to Gail Catt and we own Graceful Goodbye together. We have two amazing children, four furry dogs and two independent cats. My experiences with euthanizing my own pets at home led me to provide this service to other pet owners. I am dedicated to providing a compassionate and peaceful experience for pets and their owners during a difficult time.
