“Contrafreeloading” It’s a big old science word but it is the principle behind all those fun puzzle toys for dogs. In short, studies have shown that animals on the whole will choose to work for food over a freely available food source. The fun exception to this principle is the house cat (this should surprise no one). The neuroscience suggests that the animals get a dopamine hit not from consuming food but from the process of working towards it.
