Our FedEx rep visited us yesterday and advised us to not ship (we had already made that decision), but it was a good call since we had many airport delays last night. The great majority of our spiderlings come from breeding we do here at Fear Not and from domestic breeders we purchase from. We have great relationships with many breeders here in the US and encourage folks to breed by making things as easy as possible for them. We know this is a disappointment, but Memphis, TN is expecting even colder temperatures than we saw this week as well as the possibility of ice / snow Monday evening. We responded to a post yesterday where we were called unethical for shipping this week and want to clarify some ๐ฆ๐ข๐ฌ๐œ๐จ๐ง๐œ๐ž๐ฉ๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง๐ฌ folks have regarding the safety of shipping tarantulas in the cold. Some of the confusion comes from not understanding the difference between shipping tarantulas and reptiles. Reptiles have different safety requirements than arachnids. ๐ŸฆŽ

We always take ๐…๐”๐‹๐‹ ๐ซ๐ž๐ฌ๐ฉ๐จ๐ง๐ฌ๐ข๐›๐ข๐ฅ๐ข๐ญ๐ฒ ๐Ÿ๐จ๐ซ ๐ค๐ง๐จ๐ฐ๐ข๐ง๐  ๐ฐ๐ก๐ž๐ง ๐ญ๐จ ๐ฌ๐ก๐ข๐ฉ and we will not ship if we feel the risk is too high. As many of our customers know, we are quick to contact them when we are not comfortable shipping. We have lost a lot of business because we refuse to ship to a home if temperatures are too high or low. Picking up at a FedEx is much safer, especially during certain types of weather. With over a decade of experience, and having shipped at least 100,000 boxes, we have learned a lot about getting tarantulas to their destination safely. ๐Ÿ˜Ž

We have seen others who put the responsibly of knowing when it is safe to ship on the buyer, indicating in their terms that the live guarantee will be void if temperatures are not within certain parameters. ๐–๐„ ๐–๐ˆ๐‹๐‹ ๐๐„๐•๐„๐‘ ๐„๐•๐„๐‘ ๐’๐‡๐ˆ๐ ๐ˆ๐… ๐–๐„ ๐€๐‘๐„ ๐๐Ž๐“ ๐–๐ˆ๐‹๐‹๐ˆ๐๐† ๐“๐Ž ๐๐‘๐Ž๐•๐ˆ๐ƒ๐„ ๐€ ๐‹๐ˆ๐•๐„ ๐†๐”๐€๐‘๐€๐๐“๐„๐„.

There are many factors to consider when determining when it is safe to ship. We owe it to the creatures we put so much into every day by giving them the absolute best for their journey. We only ship using FedEx Priority Overnight because that offers the least amount of risk. When it is needed, we use special boxes that have 1 ยผโ€™ of insulation. These boxes are used by pharmaceutical companies and other industries when temperature control is critical.

While feeding today we realized a few of our Caribena versicolor (Antilles Pinktoe) spiderlings have gotten a little past the 1" mark. They are eating disabled roaches the size they are!
