August is 🐶🐾

If you suffer from seasonal or year round allergies.. your pet might too! Constant licking, scratching, ear infections, etc can be signs that your furry friend is having issues with allergies. Unfortunately, many over the counter medications simply don’t work or are not advised for animal use. If your pet is showing signs of allergies you should always reach out to your local veterinarian! ❤️

Today is national Rescue Dog Day!

If you are thinking about getting a furry friend, call your local shelter or pay them a visit. In the Hampton roads area we constantly see posts of shelters being at maximum capacity. With shelter dogs, they usually have them already spayed or neutered and start their vaccines/have them up to date.

We would love to do a new pet check on your furry friend and answer any questions you may have to give you and your new baby the best possible start!

12/01/2022

Now in the holiday season, it is difficult to look at your pet and not slip them something from the table…but that could cause much more harm than you think! Pet foods are formulated with a delicate balance to ensure the proper nutrition for your pet. Any additions to that diet, whether it be treats or table scraps, can lead to diarrhea, vomiting, or both. Pets can’t tell you that the seemingly harmless treat you give makes their stomach upset, you just find the result of that upset stomach. Some pets don’t wait for an invitation, they steal holiday food at any opportunity – from the counter, from the trash can, or even from your plate! No matter if they like the taste of the stolen food, the consequences follow. Even items marketed for pets like antlers, hooves, pig’s ears, and rawhide can cause serious damage to a pet’s intestines and teeth. Pets may also try to chew and eat items that are not food! Pets often try to eat presents, tinsel, Christmas trees, decorations, and other items that are not normally in their environment. These items can become stuck and need to be surgically removed. The busy holiday season means it can be hard to keep an eye on your pet, but a trip to the emergency vet would be even worse! Keep your pets safe and healthy this holiday season by making sure they stay away from your holiday keepsakes. If your pet steals some of your holiday goodies, you don’t have to wait and hope for the best, call us to schedule an appointment!

September is Animal Pain Awareness Month!
Has your pet suddenly started urinating more frequently? Has your pet had accidents in the house? Urinary accidents can be a simple case of incontinence or something more serious like a urinary tract infection. You don’t have to place absorbent pads or litterboxes all over your house to stop your aging pet’s accidents! An evaluation and urinalysis can provide useful information to see if your pet suffers from a urinary tract infection, urinary crystals, or incontinence. Dogs can be treated for incontinence with a daily medication. Cats may suffer from Feline Lower Urinary Tract Inflammation (FLUTI), which can be controlled with a prescription diet. If your pet is going frequently, struggling to urinate, or leaving urine spots, call us today to set up an appointment!

June is National Adopt a Shelter Cat Month!
Has your pet started limping or holding up one leg when standing or walking? Young pets may run and play so vigorously that they injure themselves. Older pets might not be able to get around like they did as a younger dog and may begin to limp. At any age, pets should never be given over-the-counter medications like humans because those medications can be harmful to pets. Instead, an evaluation can determine the likely cause of the limping. Limping often begins suddenly and may be as straightforward as a soft tissue injury or might be a complicated issue like a CCL tear (like an ACL tear in humans). Dogs and cats can both develop a limp, and it should be evaluated quickly to minimize damage to joints. Pets may even continue to limp with long-term problems that must be managed with medication and monitored with routine bloodwork. If you see your pet limping, call us to schedule an appointment!

May is National Arthritis Awareness Month!
Dogs of any breed can have seizures, but some breeds like the German Shepherd, English foxhound, pug, teacup poodle, and Boston terrier are more prone to seizures. According to Blackwell, dogs may have an aura first where the dog looks lost/frightened, seeks help, or has a glazed look. You might be familiar with the look of a seizure, the contractions of the limbs that lasts less than two minutes. Blackwell states that most seizures occur when the dog is resting or sleeping. After a seizure, dogs may be disoriented or confused, which may mean that the dog will pace aimlessly. A seizure is always scary to have to endure, but dogs often come out of the seizure activity within 20 minutes. A dog who has experienced a seizure should be examined. Most dogs should be on a daily medication to prevent seizures. The medication requires routine blood monitoring to ensure that the medication is at the correct level and to ensure that the dog is healthy while on the medication. If your pet has a seizure, call us today to schedule an evaluation!
