Luray, our yellow lab, was a snuggle bug. She loved nothing more than the love and attention from her humans… well, maybe food. She lived a wonderful life with her sister Whidbey, who passed last Christmas, May, and five human companions. As a puppy, she was a cute butterball with endless energy and a knack for getting into messes. She was spoiled in all the best ways.

May was our rescue girl. She was saved off the streets of Portsmouth. She had a troubled past, and in the years we had her, she grew to be a love bug but remained street-smart, doing full perimeter checks every morning and night to keep the house secure. She enjoyed daily walks at the park with Mom. She was also spoiled in all the best ways.

They will be missed tremendously but will always have a place in our hearts.

Lab work is more than just a test—it's your pet’s "internal physical exam." 🩺 It helps us evaluate key health markers like kidney and liver function, electrolytes, thyroid levels, and more.

Even if your pet seems healthy, lab work can detect hidden issues before symptoms appear. Prevention and early detection are especially critical for senior pets or those with underlying conditions like kidney disease.

Keep your senior pet healthy with regular lab work!

💔 Saying goodbye is never easy, but it’s important to consider how your other pets may process the loss of their companion. 🐾

📢 FAQ: Should my other pets be present for the euthanasia of their companion?
💡 Answer: We recommend that housemate pets be present during the euthanasia. This gives them the chance to understand what’s happening and say their goodbyes, helping them avoid confusion or searching for a “lost” companion afterward.

Compassionate care is important for everyone in the family. 🐾❤️

e🐾 Caring for a senior dog comes with unique joys and challenges, especially as they navigate the golden years.

In her latest blog, Dr. Mavi Graves shares a heartfelt story about Sadie, a sweet 14-year-old poodle mix, and dives into understanding CCD—its symptoms, how to manage it, and when it might be time to say goodbye. 💔

From disorientation and disrupted sleep to anxiety and behavioral changes, CCD is a progressive condition similar to Alzheimer’s in humans. While it can’t be cured, early intervention with supplements, medications, and enriching routines can help maintain your dog’s quality of life.

🐶 If your furry friend is showing signs of dementia or struggling with quality-of-life concerns, consider scheduling a TeleAdvice appointment with our compassionate team today or discuss behavioral changes with your regular veterinarian. Let us help you navigate this tender stage with care and understanding.

A Tribute for Whiskey 💚

"There are so many things I can say about Whiskey. He was a comfort and at times a royal pain but he was mine…ours. For 13 years he brought so much happiness to our family. He loved road trips and just napping in the car. He was always good for a documentary watch or just a snuggle when it was needed. He fiercely protected our home from squirrels and laid down the law when the kids misbehaved. We could always count on him to run up the stairs and duck under the bed in a bad storm or look at us like we were crazy for not hearing the same noises he heard. We missed so much this first year without him in our family Christmas photo but he is thought of and remembered constantly. He is truly missed but not forgotten."

A Tribute for Trixie 🐾💚

"She gave me so much love and joy. She made me laugh, twirled when she was happy, and leapt high into the air when I had a treat for her. She was my companion and savior during the COVID lockdowns. She always greeted me excitedly at the door when I came home, even if I was only gone for 10 minutes. God, I miss that.

When she was diagnosed with a bladder tumor and given two weeks to live, my heart wouldn’t accept that. Prayers, love, a great vet, and some good holistic medicine and supplements gave us 10 more months together. She was still so full of life even on her last day, but since she could no longer empty her bladder on her own, I had to make the caring decision to have her put to rest. It was one of the hardest things I’ve ever had to do.

We had a long and full, fun day together, doing some of her favorite things and going to some of her favorite places. Since then, she has shown me in unmistakable and miraculous ways that she is still around me. I still take her (ashes) with me on walks and to special places we used to go together. It’s very comforting.

I will love and remember you forever, my Trixie Bear!"

A Tribute for Charlie 🐾💜

"Charlie the Good Dog
You are my best friend, Charlie the Good Dog.
You fill my life with joy and love.
You wag your tail and lick my face.
You make me feel like I belong.

You love to eat your duck jerky treat.
You chew it with delight and gusto.
You even share it with me sometimes.
You are so generous and kind.

You love to go on walks with me.
You sniff and explore the world.
You chase the squirrels and birds away.
You are so brave and bold.

You love to sleep and snore in my bed.
You cuddle with me all night.
You keep me warm and safe and calm.
You are my shining light.

When you go over the rainbow bridge,
You will leave a hole in my heart.
But I will always remember you.
We will never be apart."

"Why I’m Thankful to Be an End-of-Life Care Veterinarian"
At Hampton Roads Veterinary Hospice, we often hear, “You have the hardest job in the world.” But for Dr. Mindy Brewster, this work is not just about the challenges; it’s about the incredible gratitude and meaning that comes with helping families honor the bond with their beloved pets.

💜 Authentic connections, the power of empathy, and witnessing the profound human-animal bond are just some of the reasons Dr. Brewster loves her work.

✨️ In her latest blog, Dr. Brewster reflects on what makes this work so special and why in-home end-of-life care is a gift to pets and their families alike.
