Words of wisdom from our vet!

βš πŸ¦ƒ IMPORTANT REMINDER! πŸ¦ƒβš

While you may be tempted to give your pet a small treat from the table, or let them lick your plate after your dinner - refrain! 🚫 Most of the dishes prepared on Thanksgiving are fatty, heavily salted and seasoned - and are not good for your pets. πŸ—πŸ₯§

Pancreatitis is the inflammation of the pancreas, and can result in secondary damage to other organs, dehydration and worse. Most commonly pancreatitis is triggered by ingesting fatty foods. πŸ₯“

Some common Symptoms:
πŸ— Bloated abdomen
πŸ— Stomach pain / discomfort
πŸ— Dehydration
πŸ— Diarrhea
πŸ— Fever
πŸ— Nausea
πŸ— Lethargy or weakness
πŸ— Loss of appetite
πŸ— Vomiting

If your pet has any of these symptoms, or if you suspect your pet has pancreatitis, please call your vet right away! πŸ“ž (540) 562-4596

I LOVE this so much! And, it's true!

Every new adopter or foster needs to read this!

Every new adopter or foster needs to read this!

Too much too soon WILL cause issues.
It is a really common occurrence with newly adopted dogs.

Congratulations on your new dog.
I know you want to take them to the beach, the pet store and your cafΓ©....however can I ask for a few minutes so I can explain just what your dog has gone through.....and why you need to take the next few weeks SLOW.
Your new dog has had it's whole world turned upside down.
They don't know you.
They don't know if they can trust you.
They don't know if they are with you for an hour or forever.
They may have been in various scary places.
Other houses, rescues, the pound and likely ALL of these in the past few days or weeks.
Your dog has stress hormones surging through their brain, they are STRESSED....they need to decompress, they need STABILITY in their environment and from you.
They need time with you and their new environment.
They need to know that the tree outside may rustle against the house and that's OK.
They need to know that those normal creaky noises in your house are OK and that at 3.45 the neighbours bang their door shut.
They need to know when it rains that tapping sound is OK.
They need to know that when the door opens they won't be moved somewhere else again.
They need to trust that YOU are safe even when you have had a bad day, you will still give them food and that they can close their eyes around you.
You know what your good intentions are with your new dog, your dog however has NO idea what is happening.....only that everything has changed and it is scary.
They do NOT need other new environments yet. Take it SLOW.
Dogs that have just been adopted need TIME. There is no need to rush out the next day and take them to all the places you want to go with them.....They need the opposite.
Let them decompress, let them inspect a new area of your house or yard every day or two. Walk them up and down outside your house for a few days (and only there), let them sniff, and sniff some more. Let them p*e freely.....it may be boring for you, but not for your dog. They need to know what is happening around them and they learn that through their nose, eyes and ears.
They NEED this.
They need to learn to TRUST you.
The long walks can wait, the cafΓ© will still be there in a few weeks and you can visit the pet shop alone until they are ready.
Your bond together is the MOST important thing to concentrate on right now.
You will never regret taking it slow and it can save your dog and yourself from making the very same mistakes that can lead to people rehoming in the first place.
All the very best with your new dog.

Everyone who is thinking of getting dogs should read this because you need to understand this reality:
***I am a 21st century dog.***

-I'm a Malinois.
Overskilled among dogs, I excel in all disciplines and I'm always ready to work: I NEED to work.
But nowadays I get asked to chill on the couch all day everyday.

-I am an Akita Inu.
My ancestors were selected for fighting bears.
Today I get asked to be tolerant and I get scolded for my reactivity when another approaches me.

-I am a Beagle.
When I chase my prey, I raise my voice so the hunters could follow.
Today they put an electric collar on me to shut up, and you make me come back to you - no running - with a snap of your fingers.

-I am a Yorkshire Terrier.
I was a terrifying rat hunter in English mines.
Today they think I can't use my legs and they always hold me in their arms.

-I'm a Labrador Retriever.
My vision of happiness is a dive into a pond to bring back the duck he shot to my master.
Today you forget I'm a walking, running, swimming dog; as a result I'm fat, made to stay indoors, and to babysit.

-I am a Jack Russell.
I can take on a fox, a mean badger, and a rat bigger than me in his den.
Today I get scolded for my character and high energy, and forced to turn into a quiet living room dog.

-I am a Siberian Husky.
Experienced the great, wide open spaces of Northern Europe, where I could drag sleds for long distances at impressive sp*eds.
Today I only have the walls of the house or small garden as a horizon, and the holes I dig in the ground just to release energy and frustration, trying to stay sane.

-I am a border collie
I was made to work hours a day in partnershipwith my master, and I am an unmistakable artist of working with the herd.
Today they are mad at me because, for lack of sheep, I try to check bikes, cars, children in the house and everything in motion.

I am ...
I am a 21st century dog.
I'm pretty, I'm alert, I'm obedient, I stay in a bag...but I'm also an individual who, from centuries of training, needs to express my instincts, and I am *not* suited for the sedentary life you'd want me to lead.
Spending eight hours a day alone in the house or in the garden - with no work and no one to play or run with, seeing you for a short time in the evening when you get home, and only getting a small toilet walk will make me deeply unhappy.
I'll express it by barking all day, turning your yard into a minefield, doing my needs indoors, being unmanageable the rare times I'll find myself outside, and sometimes spending my days sunk, sad, lonely, and depressed, on my pillow.
You may think that I should be happy to be able to enjoy all this comfort while you go to work, but actually I’ll be exhausted and frustrated, because this is absolutely NOT what I'm meant to do, or what I need to be doing.
If you love me, if you've always dreamed of me, if my beautiful blue eyes or my athletic look make you want me, but you can't give me a real dog's life, a life that's really worth living according to my breed, and if you can't offer me the job that my genes are asking, DO NOT buy or adopt me!
If you like the way I look but aren't willing to accept my temperament, gifts, and traits derived from long genetic selection, and you think you can change them with only your good will, then DO NOT BUY OR ADOPT ME.
I’m a dog from the 21st century, yes, but deep inside me, the one who fought, the one who hunted, the one who pulled sleds, the one who guided and protected a herd still lives within.
So think **very** carefully before you choose your dog. And think about getting two, rather than one, so I won't be so very lonely waiting for you all day. Eight or ten hours is just a workday to you, but it's an eternity for me to be alone.

So many benefits to pets being "fixed" once the right time comes!

It's WORLD SPAY DAY! 🐢🌎🐱 This day is observed to encourage spaying and neutering your pets to avoid pet overpopulation and avoid the overcrowding of animal shelters.

Spaying and neutering your pet also has health benefits! Intact animals are more likely to develop cancer, have an increased desire to roam, risk of spraying and marking, among other aggressive & other unwanted behaviors. πŸΎπŸ’™

Like and share this post to help promote spaying and neutering your pets! πŸΎπŸ’™

Just a reminder..

While we'd love to see all of our pets in homes for the holiday, please don't adopt unless you are prepared to love them for a lifetime! When planning to adopt there are a few things to keep in mind:
Are you financially prepared for the extra expense?
Have checked with all members in your home to make sure they're okay with a new pet?
If renting, is your landlord okay with pets? Are there breed/size restrictions? What's your plan if you have to move?
Did you do research on the type/breed of pet you are thinking about adopting? Make sure their energy level is compatible with your lifestyle!

Sadly, we've already started to receive phone calls from people looking to surrender their 5-6 month old puppies. We ask that if you find yourself needing to surrender your pet, please exhaust all other options first. We are happy to recommend local trainers if there's behavioral issues. We can point you in the direction of other rescue organizations that can provide your pet the best chances of being adopted without having to come into a shelter environment. Please use us as your last resort, and keep in mind we do schedule owner sign over appointments.

Please keep your pets safe this holiday!

Please keep your pets safe this holiday!

Just a little reminder post since Thanksgiving is this week, and we all love to share with our furry friends! πŸ—πŸ½πŸ₯—

Please refer to this image for a list of some safe and UNsafe foods that are common around a big feast! If you do choose to offer a special snack to your pet, just always offer in moderation, and little to no seasonings/salt is best! πŸΎπŸ’™

⚠And as always, don't forget to keep trash and other unsafe foods out of your pets reach!

I'm so glad to see the American College of Veterinary Behaviorists take a strong stand against "the Dog Daddy". I agree with their letter 100%. The last thing the dog training world needs is another "trainer" promoting outdated and cruel methods. Is scaring/hurting your dog the basis for a good bond and relationship??? No!
