Happy Licensed Veterinary Technician Week!! 🩺 🐢 🐱

These are the doctor's right hand. LVTs are governed by the Virginia Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners, which also regulates veterinarian licensing. Licensing is not mandatory to work in a veterinary hospital, but grants certain abilities under Virginia law. A licensed technician has achieved recognition at the state and national levels by undergoing a two or four year accredited college program and passing board certification exams, much like a Registered Nurse. An American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited Veterinary Technician program covers all aspects of veterinary medicine, including anatomy and physiology, radiology, dentistry, pharmacology, and parasitology. LVTs must also attend Continuing Education programs to maintain their licensing and to keep their skills sharp.
While an LVT cannot diagnose your pet or prescribe medication for a problem, they have the knowledge and resources to gather the best information and diagnostics to help the doctors get to the root of the problem, and to execute the doctor's plan effectively. Veterinarians can delegate many supervisory and technical tasks to an LVT, which allows the doctor to focus on the big picture. Licensed technicians are trained to induce and monitor anesthesia, take dental and body radiographs, practice phlebotomy and venipuncture, and so much more. They play such a vital role in everything with we do at our hospital! So this week we try to make things a bit more special for them. Janeen, Linda, Tiffany, Melissa, Kiley, Gabby, Savannah, and our LVT student Analee! Thank you for all that you do. You eight ladies are so special to us! ❀️

It’s a great day for a cystotomy! Dr. Dailey and Dr. Evans are helping this pup get some relief after being blocked from urinating due to some rare stones- cystine stones!
Thought to be caused by a genetic abnormality, these stones are not the smooth ones we normally see. They are more common in male dogs and often not seen on radiographs. Good news is they were all removed and with a change in diet this pup will recover just fine!

Cleft palate is a birth defect that occurs when the roof of the mouth (palate) fails to properly fuse together and leaves a space between the mouth and the nasal-sinus cavity. This defect can affect the hard, bony portion of the palate, the soft flexible area that is used for swallowing, or both. The condition occurs during gestation and is usually fairly obvious at or soon after birth.

These kittens involve extensive care, tube feedings and often do not do well after birth. Fortunately, this young kitten had exceptional care from birth until now. Now that he was old enough and healthy we were able to repair the defect. We are happy to say the surgery went well. We will monitor him very closely, along with his foster parents, over the next several weeks to ensure his recovery goes well. His after care will involve tube feedings thru an esophagostomy (feeding tube) placed post-op so that his mouth has time to heal. !!
