It's Meet Me Monday!

Meet Sable. Sable is a young female of about 2 years old (born 5.22.2022)
A good Samaritan found her in a crate outside of a store.

Though she's sweet, she can be a bit shy. Sable would do best as an only dog, as she can be reactive to others. She also grew up with kids and cats.

To ask about Sable, please message us

Ask A Vet!

We’re setting up a Q & A session with a vet about questions: while this won’t be live, we’d like it if you submitted questions in the comments.

We will send 5 to the vet for answers

Oh my gosh! Yay! We are so happy to report that after waiting two years in rescue, Gabby has found her forever home with RIAR alum Jake!

Gabby originally came to us in 2020, along with her parents (Kyoto and Keito) and her brothers (Gabe and Gordon). Their owner had fallen on hard times, and left them all with a friend to be cared for. Sadly things just weren't improving, and he eventually told his friend to find them all new homes.

Gabby was adopted in 2020, but came back to us in 2022 following a family tragedy.

Happy new life, Gabby!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️

It's Meet Me Monday!

Vladimir is a younger adult male (born 7/21/2019). Due to unfortunate circumstances of his previous owners, he found himself in rescue.
Vladimir is a silly guy, but takes a little while to warm up. He would do best with a house that is familiar with Akitas.

Please contact us if you would be interested in adopting this handsome boy!

GDV or “bloat” as it’s commonly called, can be frightening to both the dog and its owner.

It’s important to know the early signs, as it can save your pups life. Early identification and treatment can be key.

Please read and understand the early warning signs. If in doubt, call your vet!

We are so happy to share that Shiba Pup has been adopted! We normally wouldn't do an adoption so fast, especially as he was still healing from his injuries, but the stars aligned for this little guy! His new family consists of TWO veterinarians, one of whom we've worked with for a couple years, who had been wanting a Shiba puppy! ❤️ Happy new life!

For those asking for updates on the injured Shiba puppy... who? I mean, we do *have* a Shiba puppy, but there's clearly nothing wrong with him ;)

From time to time, you may have noticed, we do take in the occasional Shiba. *Ahem* Mac And Cheese 😉

Well, this little guy was found by a good Samaritan in Hampton, VA on July 13. They said they were driving down a busy street, and he just appeared in front of them, bloody and screaming! They were unsure if he had been struck by a car or thrown from one, but quickly set about saving him from traffic. He was one lucky kid because the people who found him happen to work in the veterinary field and immediately rushed him to a local ER for treatment.

It turned out that he is about 6 months old, he bit a large hole in his tongue (which is always a bloody mess), fractured his pelvis, and one of his back legs. No microchip. All in all, he could have been a LOT worse off!

The Samaritans were kind enough to foster him during his stray hold (10 days) with the shelter, and then, when he remained unclaimed, he was transferred to our care.

We took him straight to our vet to have him assessed. Thankfully, he is young, so continued crate confinement while he heals is the recommendation course of action.

So now we just need to name him, as "Shiba Pup" (as he's currently listed at the vet) isn't a proper name 😅

Thoughts?

We are sad to say that we lost Freddie to bloat late in the evening of July 3. We guess by his condition and his heartworms that he did not have a good life prior to rescue, but at least we were able to make his last few months comfortable 💔 Thank you to Cherish Pet Cremations for taking care of him on a holiday and for this beautiful memorial.

While adoptions and intake have slowed to a halt, someone has suggested that we do some Akita 101 content, and we'd be happy to! What topics should we cover? Do you have specific questions? Were there things you wish you had known before getting an Akita? Things you feel like non-Akita people don't know or understand? Things that maybe you need help with or still don't understand?

We know it's been a minute since we have said so, but THANK YOU to everyone who continues to send us donations through Chewy!!! We will *never* euthanize for space, but with no adoptions in months, we struggle to maintain the ones we have. Donating food and treats is a HUGE help, and we are beyond grateful!! We do not know who sends us the donations, so we cannot thank you individually, but we DO thank you!! ❤️❤️❤️

Akita kisses and woo woos to you all!!
