I was a professional dog trainer for years, but it never sat right with me. I was in it for the dogs, you see, and when you train dogs for roles, you have to think just as much about the position they will fill as you do the dog.

And I just wanted to think about the dog.

That’s why I was there.

This is why I find the current changes we see in the dog training industry so heartening.

Good pet dog trainers are moving into being family dog therapists.

Excellent dog trainers are becoming ethologists.

Dogs are being encouraged to be who they are, and their guardians learn what their dogs need.

We have started watching them for fear, anxiety and pain.

We heartily and scientifically question the backward habit of labelling their struggles as ‘dominance’.

We encourage understanding.

We embrace a dog’s individuality.

We understand that behaviour is just a dog trying to meet their needs in an unnatural environment.

Instead of changing that behaviour, we identify the dog’s needs, and we meet them halfway.

We don’t create an oppressed dog; we create harmony.

We are getting better at it all the time.

Thank dog for that.

Tip time! Especially when pups are young, intentionally play with their feet. By doing things like touching their feet, toes, and nails during positive play, you desensitize them to being touched in these areas when it's time for nail trims.

It is with much excitement and some sadness that we look to the future. We want to thank you for your business friendship and support over the last 25+ years. Sundowners Kennels is transitioning its business to training only in a nearby location. The boarding business and property are being sold with the hopes that it will continue to serve the community as a commercial kennel. As we know more we will keep you informed. Though we will no longer do boarding in our new location we will continue to do private lessons classes and long-term boarding school. So many of you have sent multiple generations of dogs for training and boarding with us. We are so honored that you have trusted us with your 4 foot family members. We will truly miss them. Have had several sets of troublesome litter mates come in for training in the last 6 months. Most people don't realize how challenging raising litter mates together can be. These boys are coming along nicely. Who can guess the three breeds that make up this genetic picture. Hercules and Maximus. Just love their tails.

Raising a litter of puppies is a lot of work. But so much joy as well. Can't believe they'll be seven weeks old tomorrow. Temperament testing at 11 AM tomorrow morning

Trying to space out my video posts from last weekend. This one is Ruby Houghton's 2nd Novice obedience leg. I describe her as a roller coaster ride, I am either holding my breath or grinning madly. Love this girl.

New Disaster Search Dog In The House! Meet Cali the yellow lab. She was born and raised in Oklahoma and was flown to us in April to start training for her career. She's loving it!

So met this cute girl during my cross country riding clinic. If only we could teach them to play as a team we would have a whole new dog sport.
