“He (she) doesn’t….”
“She (he) won’t….”
“My dog escaped…”

What if we change our thinking to “I have not built a relationship with my dog where he (she) understands and respects boundaries?”

People so often put the blame on the dog but have not taken the time to communicate effectively through consistent and clear messages to the dog. When we communicate to a dog as though it is a human and not a canine, the dog is often put into a position to guess what words and actions mean rather than to know the use of the word for a singular action.

For example, “down” cues the action of the dog to lie on the belly with paws and legs on the floor. However, people will also often say “sit down” or “get down”. This blurs the image of the “down” command in the dog creating inconsistency and, therefore, confusion for the dog.

No one wants to work with a wish/washy leader or be in a relationship where the rules continually change and keep us guessing. It causes us to live in a state of anxiety, confusion, frustration, etc.

Setting and keeping clear guidelines with a dog not only builds trust, but, to not do so, is actually unfair and, depending on the situation, can be cruel. Boundaries help not only build relationship, but maintain safety for the dog.

Be consistent, clear, and fair. Please own the responsibility rather than placing the blame on the dog when not providing clarity.

Dogs are wonderful and can do so much! Let’s rise up in our communications with our dogs to bring out the best in both of us.

Dogs, just like us, can get a bit flustered in new situations. Before you slap them with the "stubborn" label, consider if they're just feeling a tad unsure or overwhelmed. Knowing this difference is key to nailing your training game. 🐕🤔

Key Takeaways:

🤔🚫 Confusion isn't defiance. Know the difference.
🌟 Show some patience. Newbies need varied approaches.
⚠️ Don’t rely only on e-collar zaps for quick fixes; fairness is the name of the game.
📖 Master the art of reading your dog's body language everywhere. Even top dogs get distracted sometimes..

More valley dogs could be saved if more fosters stepped up! It can be super rewarding and give you a chance to work with a dog before actually committing to 12-18 years.

Woof needs Fosters! 🩷

Woof is foster based, and we need foster homes lined up to rescue the countless wonderful dogs that are in risk in shelters.

Can you open your home to Brinkley as foster? Brinkley is waiting patiently and is ready for a long-term foster, foster to adopt or adoption! 🏡

This pretty girl loves to take in her surroundings and smell every inch she can! Once she has checked things out, she is happy to settle in for some pets. She has moderate energy, minimal ball drive, and will need an active handler to keep her body and mind stimulated.

She can be stubborn so often needs firm, but fair correction. With continued training, she is making great improvement.

With her love of using her nose and insanely high prey drive, nose work and barn hunt are just a few sports she may like to engage in. She has been tested with cats and horses and will not be placed in a home with small animals or livestock.
Brinkley would also likely do well with another neutral dog to play with after proper introductions. She rides well when crated in the car and is well-mannered at the vets' office.

Learn more about Brinkley and the other dogs waiting for placement here: woofproject.org/need

Applications can be found at woofproject.org/application

Questions about fostering? We understand! Please fill out an application and we can discuss all of our questions and discuss what dog may work best for your home environment.

Brinkley is located in Palmdale, CA but Fosters can live anywhere in our service area! Woof Project covers states south and west of Montana, including Alaska and parts of Canada.

Until next time, Dubuque Iowa and Robin MacFarlane, “Be Your Dog’s Hero” 🙂 You truly are all of our heroes, and definitely the dogs!!! Thank You for all you do, and leading a path of brilliance in clarity, inspiration, and empathy.

It was a pawsome learning opportunity, fun get away, and amazing time! But very short. I’m just thankful I was able to fit it in… this has been back and forth the last year! I made it!!!! It was a wonderful reunion, and great meeting new people as well. It was a little awkward as I did not bring a dog, which is a first for me! It was fun working a few others, who were amazing sports! I may post more photos later on.

The new information with the nutritional advice and options of effective tests and balanced meals, with Dr. Christine Woodford https://www.vipsvet.net/ is extremely exciting!!!! I’ve already referred a couple of people over whom I feel can receive top notch help here. These are people who have dogs who have significant medical and nutritional issues they’ve been struggling with. I cant wait to hear updates and see what a difference this can make!! Virtual options are so helpful. I am looking forward to possibly learning more about how I can help Peach a bit more through these options as well, and eventually play around with the new app to monitor my other animals’ meals a bit more effectively. Technology and Science merging with holistic care. Truly awesome news with new hope. 🐾🎉

The MidWest was so beautiful and had perfect weather for this trip!

This is a book I plan to read and encourage anyone interested in learning more about dog nutrition in reading as well. There is such a strong link between dog nutrition, dog behavior, and general dog health. A happy balance is a requirement at minimum to have healthy, happy dogs who have good gut health and can live long healthy lives. I’ve been studying dog nutrition for over twenty years and still feel like a complete beginner… learning every day. Chinese based nutrition has been a bit more fascinating and a stronger learning curve for me, but I’m determined to eventually grasp it as it all makes sense! Just been a bit more difficult for me to learn. I appreciate and Thank all my clients who have allowed me to help where I can, and learn with you over the years. As well as my dogs who have been through so many trials, which have been quite successful.🐾♥️ I’m also forever grateful to the more holistically minded veterinarians and nutritionists who have helped and supported me over the years. Without you, I’d be at a total loss on so many levels. It’s such a vast, fascinating world. Now if I could only eat as healthy as my dogs…. I think I need to work on that😂😂🤔 It’s definitely easier said that done! 🤦‍♀️

I’m forever grateful for the teamwork I had with these two, who were amazingly helpful “colleague K-9’s” as they traveled through several states, and accompanied me to many homes to help people and their dogs. Nita was a very special dog who I would have never imagined filling such a role. She taught me so much and filled roles I didn’t know existed, while helping me to help so many dogs. If you were considered a friend by Nita, you knew how special she was. I miss her and miss having Bootsie’s teammate! Bootsie does just fine on her own though, and is doing amazingly well. 🐾

Two completely opposite pups that made an amazing team to help one trainer make a difference with rehab dogs, as well as Bootsie being a pro at helping with obedience, manners, & impulse control. :-)

Truth! Feeding and walking can easily lead to a huge amount of accomplishment

Truth! Feeding and walking can easily lead to a huge amount of accomplishment

There is always time to train the dog.

Too often people believe it is an "all or nothing" approach to training. They are under the false impression that if they don't have 20-30 minutes of concentrated time to devote to training, they may as well not do it at all that day.

If that were the case, my dog would rarely get trained! 😅

Certainly if you have 20 - 30 minutes and can do that once or twice a day, that is FANTASTIC!! but if you don't have that much time available, make the most of the time you do have.

The key is to integrate training into your daily routine rather than making it a line item on your to-do list.

Have the dog wait every time you open the kennel dog so they learn not to charge out. And then have him/her sit every time you put the leash on and as you open the door to head outside together.

Practice a few doggie push-ups (Sit-Down-Sit-Down) while your waiting for the coffee to brew. And then make the pup remain on their place while you prep their breakfast.

Start your walk with a few minutes of heel, then allow the sniffari if you want to, but finish that final block to the house with the heel command again.

Have your dog remain on their Place or hold a Down while you eat dinner. And practice the off/leave it command when you load the dishwasher (unless you appreciate the dog doing the dish scrapping for you!)

You have to take care of the dog, which means there is always time to Train.

Change your thinking, then change the routine and pretty soon you will have changed your dog's behavior for the better.

No more excuses.
