Athena was in for her final heartworm test post heartworm treatment and says “I’m heartworm free!!!”

She came to us all the way from Puerto Rico and tested positive for heartworm disease almost a year ago.

Heartworm is transmitted by mosquitoes – so warm, muggy areas are certainly hotbeds, but infection has been reported in all 50 U.S. states. If a mosquito carrying heartworm larvae bites your dog – one bite is all it takes! those larvae will make themselves at home within your dog, travel to their heart and lungs, and develop into mature heartworms and start reproducing.

If you have questions about heartworm prevention, please call our office!

All dog owners should be aware of bloat, the symptoms, signs and urgency for care. We have had 2 cases in the last few months. If your dog is large breed or deep chested, consider an elective surgical procedure called a gastropexy to significantly reduce chances of bloat or lessens the mortality rate.

Did you know X-rays for most vomiting animals help identify life-threatening diseases, such as an ingested foreign object. In some situations, we may need to induce vomiting to empty the stomach to prevent further issues! Induced vomiting is a treatment option that can be done only within two hours of consuming (the sooner the better!)

Some things should not be vomited up though.
It's always best to call your veterinarian if your pet eats something unusual.

Salt ornaments are pretty and a staple of preschool holiday craft projects. Children bring them home and give them as gifts. And they’re potentially deadly to dogs.

We’re As Wild About Animals As You Are!

Dr. Marc Rosenberg, who you may remember from hisPBS television show “People Pets & Dr. Marc” or his radio shows on WCAU, WWDB and KYW, opened the Voorhees Veterinary Center in 1986.

Dr. Rosenberg and the professional staff of The Voorhees Veterinary Center have strong commitments to the humane efforts of local shelters and rescue groups. In addition, Dr. Rosenberg has a long time association with The Humane Society of The United States, a relationship begun by his father, Dr. Sydney Rosenberg, who was instrumental in establishing the current New Jersey low cost spay neuter program.

The Veterinarians at The Voorhees Veterinary Center have special interests in the areas of veterinary dentistry, surgery, ophthalmology, orthopedics, cancer care, acupuncture, senior care, companion pet loss and grief support. These interests along with our comprehensive pet medical care allow our staff of professionals to help you help your pets.
