The giraffe will still be visible outdoors as long as the feels like temperature is above 41 degrees. If it's lower than 41, you can see them in their night house.

Hiya from Gaia!

Cameron Park Zoo is thrilled to welcome Gaia, a female black-footed cat, who weighs a mere 3 pounds. She was born on April 16, 2023, at Fossil Rim Wildlife Center in Glen Rose, Texas. She was later transferred in October 2023 to Hogle Zoo in Salt Lake City before being recommended by the AZA Small Cat Alliance (SCA) Black-footed Cat Consortium for a move to Cameron Park Zoo, where she will be paired with a male for future breeding. Her future mate will be coming from Living Desert Museum in Tucson, Arizona and is expected to arrive at Cameron Park Zoo soon.

What makes black-footed cats so extraordinary?

🌟With a 60% hunting success rate, they're known as the world's deadliest cat!

👀 Their vision is six times better than humans!

🌍 Native to the savannas, grasslands, and deserts of Namibia, Botswana, and South Africa, their population is dwindling, with only about 9,700 left in the wild. This number has them listed as vulnerable with the IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature).

As part of a coordinated conservation effort, black-footed cats are managed by 15 zoos across two regions. In Africa, three zoos are home to a total of 22 males and 24 females, with five births recorded in the past year. In North America, 12 zoos house 10 males and 17 females, with five births reported. The combined efforts of these institutions help ensure the survival of this extraordinary species.

Cameron Park Zoo is committed to supporting conservation efforts for black-footed cats and providing an educational experience for visitors to learn more about these.

Cameron Park Zoo is excited to announce a female baby gerenuk was born on October 6 and has been named Marcella (Marci). Her name originates from the Roman god Mars and means warlike, martial, and strong. Marci’s mother is Cornelia and her father is Kronk.

Gerenuks, native to Africa, are unique members of the antelope family, known for their remarkable ability to stand upright on their hind legs. This fascinating adaptation allows them to reach leaves high up in trees and tall bushes, highlighting their incredible agility and feeding behavior.

All of the animals in our African Savanna hoofstock yard may not be visible due to the weather. Be sure to check our weather factors page before your visit to see what might be affected by cooler temperatures: https://www.cameronparkzoo.com/plan-your-visit/weather-factors/

The staff of Cameron Park Zoo are deeply saddened to announce the passing of Kenai, our juvenile black bear. Kenai’s journey began in Alaska, where he was discovered by Alaska Department of Fish and Game biologists. He appeared to be separated from his mother and searching for food. After being rescued he was brought to the Alaska Zoo in Anchorage, where their staff rehabilitated him over the winter months.

In March 2023, the Alaska Zoo and Cameron Park Zoo partnered to bring Kenai to Waco. He was estimated to be 7 or 8 months old. His playful spirit and unique backstory quickly endeared him to both staff and visitors.

This past October, Kenai started showing signs of a decreased appetite and activity level. Originally, staff believed Kenai was exhibiting some signs of seasonal torpor after a decrease in outside temperatures. However, Kenai’s activity level gradually improved while his appetite slowly declined. To investigate the underlying cause, he was anesthetized for a physical exam and diagnostics. Results showed that Kenai had developed kidney failure. Additionally, an ultrasound showed some unusual tissue around his kidneys. Based on these findings, veterinary staff decided that exploratory surgery would be needed to figure out the cause. During surgery, a mass was found on his right kidney that appeared consistent with cancer. Given that the mass could not be surgically removed and with Kenai still having kidney failure, the decision was made to humanely euthanize. A necropsy performed the following day confirmed cancer in both kidneys as well as a few other areas. While cancer and kidney disease are not uncommon in bears, these conditions are usually seen in older bears. Kenai was estimated to be approximately 2 years old at the time of his death.

🐧 Some penguin ASMR for 🐧

Penguin spend a lot of time bathing and preening their feathers in order to keep them clean and waterproof. The waterproofing is important, since that is part of what keeps them warm in chilly water!

Cameron Park Zoo wants to wish a Happy Veterans Day to all who have bravely served our country and for those we remember and hold close to our hearts today. To honor the day, we performed a flag raising ceremony at the entrance of the zoo this morning and want to share a powerful and impactful poem written by Anthony Dewayne Prior, a veteran who never lost a soldier under his leadership while serving two combat tours in Iraq. Anthony loved his country and fought for our freedom with honor, and we are proud to remember and honor Anthony and all other active service workers and veterans today.

WHAT I DO
What I do for a living, I have no shame
I produce clouds of thunder, lightning, and rain
In the cold wet dark, I stand alone
Steel and armor is now my home
I don't need your honor or your glory
I don't tell my family, because I don't want them to worry
I just give my best in every situation
I don't need awards or fancy citations
My grandma said be the best in whatever you do
And her words are all I need to carry through

Even though I prosper, I am not looking to gain
I don't want the spot light, I don't want the fame
I spend most of my time working in the rain
What I do for a living I have no shame

By Anthony Dewayne Prior
