📢 📢📢📢 Attention horse owners in our area!
There’s been a few recent reports of other DVM’s seeing positive cases of West Nile Virus in their equine patients!
Horses infected with the virus will exhibit neurological symptoms such as hind end weakness/stumbling (ataxia), trembling, walking in circles and fine muscle tremors (like in the facial area). These will likely appear to come on suddenly!
WNV is not spread from horse to horse. It must be carried by an infected mosquito or flying, biting insect.
Please make sure your horses are up to date on the West Nile vaccine. While vaccinated horses can still contract WNV, the outcome is far better than those that are unvaccinated. If you do notice a sudden onset of neurological symptoms, please get them to your primary veterinary team ASAP.
