i see way too many make the mistake of free feeding their dogs.
if you don’t know what free feeding is, it’s essentially “graze feeding” or leaving food available for constant access throughout the day.
food is one of the biggest reward systems dogs get value from.
by allowing food to be readily available whenever they please, devalues the quality of that reward.
there is no living being that doesn’t have to work for their food, not even us humans, it’s nature. there is a lot of value in having to work for something or at the very least being patient for it.
i always have clients come to me saying that they are struggling with getting their dogs to eat, or that their dog is very picky.
the result of free feeding every time, offering the food, for free.
as most dogs don’t have traditional jobs like us humans do, the best thing we can do for them is make them feel like they have a job here at home and the reward for that, food becomes a lot more enticing for them.
it also builds better relationships between you and your dog, scheduled feeding teaches them that the food comes from you.
if your dog/s seem to be struggling with food besides allergies or health concerns, it’s best to reevaluate their feeding schedule.
it’s never too late, consult a professional, food drive can be rebuilt.
