i see way too many make the mistake of free feeding their dogs.

if you don’t know what free feeding is, it’s essentially “graze feeding” or leaving food available for constant access throughout the day.

food is one of the biggest reward systems dogs get value from.

by allowing food to be readily available whenever they please, devalues the quality of that reward.

there is no living being that doesn’t have to work for their food, not even us humans, it’s nature. there is a lot of value in having to work for something or at the very least being patient for it.

i always have clients come to me saying that they are struggling with getting their dogs to eat, or that their dog is very picky.

the result of free feeding every time, offering the food, for free.

as most dogs don’t have traditional jobs like us humans do, the best thing we can do for them is make them feel like they have a job here at home and the reward for that, food becomes a lot more enticing for them.

it also builds better relationships between you and your dog, scheduled feeding teaches them that the food comes from you.

if your dog/s seem to be struggling with food besides allergies or health concerns, it’s best to reevaluate their feeding schedule.

it’s never too late, consult a professional, food drive can be rebuilt.

*disclaimer
unfortunately the program i use to cull through my photos messed up and didn't set my photos in order they were taken, along with the file names not being in order to begin with which usually doesn't happen.

with that being said, i tried my best to make sure i organized each section to the best of my knowledge. if your dog ran in one category but you don't see their photo under it please check the other ones.

thank you and i hope you all enjoy!
if you have any questions or concerns, feel free to reach out to me either through the message button on my page or by email: [email protected].

september is 🐾

i’d like to take a moment to show appreciation for these amazing dogs that have a huge impact on their handler’s lives.

there is a lot of misinformation and judgement surrounding service dogs, they are considered by law medical equipment.

• what is a service dog?
a dog who is task trained for their handler’s individual disability/s.

per the ADA law, which is the american with disabilities act, things like identification cards, registrations, certifications, or even gear that labels the dog as a service dog does NOT hold any legal value in terms of if the dog is legit or not.

asking an individual for their medical information, or for the dog to demonstrate one’s tasks is not appropriate either.

these rights are constantly being taken advantage of or so misunderstood to the point that it makes it very difficult for the individuals who choose to have a service animal as a treatment plan to live their everyday life without having to constantly fight for it.

one of the most asked questions i get from clients is “how long will it take?”

and although i understand that some have been dealing with certain issues for awhile now, hiring a trainer being only after they’ve lost patience for the behavior.

every dog has their own pace that must be respected. rushing the process can cause messy results, meaning they won’t be as solid or reliable.

for most dogs it’s not even the behavior that needs to be addressed, it’s the emotions behind why they are exhibiting the actions.

as a trainer, we want nothing more than for you to succeed and carry on what the both of you were taught.

just like humans, dogs have their own learning preferences and durations. we are here to help provide them guidance not force them to be exactly what we want.

be patient, understand your dog’s cues and train confidently 🐾

crate training is essential and shouldn’t be a choice when owning a dog.

now whether or not how often you crate your dog is completely up to anyone’s discretion, however you should still be practicing on a decent basis.

a couple of reasons crate training is so important:

➝ when supervision cannot be provided
➝ safest way to travel in an automobile
➝ emergencies, vet visits & service days such as grooming or training
➝ multi dog household management
➝ household with small children
➝ prevent or significantly decrease certain behaviors
➝ rest for injuries or after surgeries, some dogs don’t take the restrictions well.

but just like all things there are also certain scenarios where crating may not be to your advantage, and knowing when the right time is essential.

some scenarios where the crate should not be used:

➝ as a form of punishment for bad behaviors
➝ separation anxiety
➝ extremely destructive behaviors where they may harm themselves attempting to escape
➝ high amounts of hours a day without ample breaks in between
➝ if you plan to invade their space

consider crate training your dog to prepare them for situations where it’s not an option otherwise. in most cases if they need to be crated, but they weren’t prepared for it, it can cause a very unpleasant amount of discomfort and stress to your dog.

Littermate Syndrome - Why getting 2 puppies isn't a great idea.

Littermate syndrome is the name given when 2 puppies (usually littermates, but this can happen with puppies from different litters of similar ages) are homed together and develop an unhealthy level of attachment to each other.

Puppies with littermate syndrome often have trouble bonding with humans because they are so attached to each other. They are often anxious or nervous around different people and dogs or in new environments. They are much harder to train and often don't want to participate in training sessions.

The easiest way to prevent littermate syndrome from developing is to not get 2 puppies at the same time, especially littermates. Most reputable breeders will not sell 2 puppies to the same family, for excellent reasons.

If you have already recently gotten littermates, there are things that you can do to prevent littermate syndrome from developing but it can take some hard work and a lot of time and management in the early stages.

Things you can do:
- Have separate areas for each puppy so they can spend plenty of time apart from each other. This could be separate crates for sleeping, separate play pens to spend time in during the day and limit the amount of time that your puppies spend together while they are developing.
- Train the puppies separately and take them on individual outings to different places, so they learn how to cope with the world on their own and also learn to be at home alone without distress.
- Treat each puppy as an individual
- If you don't have the time or resources to be able to give each puppy as much alone time as they need to thrive, you could also find another loving home for one of the puppies so each puppy has the opportunity to live their best life and become confident, happy adults.

practicing the art of settling is extremely important in a dog’s life.

balancing between physical/mental activities and days where you do absolutely nothing.

i have seen plenty of dogs who exercise every single day to the point where they never learned how to settle and will absolutely shut down if that exercise isn’t given.

pacing around, becoming frequently more vocal, destructive, and even unnecessary anxiety

which is not healthy.

giving physical exercise to the point where your dog is in a state of exhaustion frequently will not only cause it to become more and more difficult to exhaust them the next time, but also getting your dog in the mindset that it’s the only way they can function.

not a lot of people realize the damage this does to their dogs and their mental health.

practice ways to meet their needs inside the house, it doesn’t always have to be physical.

mental stimulation is just as important and can be achieved with puzzles, training sessions, controlled play, anything your dog has to think about in order to do.

but also taking days out of your normal routine to do absolutely nothing.

not only will it help with behavior modifications, but it will also prevent some as well.

there will come times in your dog’s life that meeting these stimulation needs are unachievable, get them prepared for it.

your dog will thank you.
