Through the Eyes of a Stray

I don’t remember the last time I had a name. Maybe I did once—when I was small, when my fur was clean, when a warm hand touched my head. But now, I am only "dog" or "stray" or the thing people shoo away.

The world is loud. Cars rush by, spraying cold water on my paws. I flinch at the sound of yelling, the clatter of trash cans, the sudden sting of a thrown rock. I have learned that not all hands are kind. Some reach out, but I cannot trust them. Others strike without warning.

Hunger is an ache that never leaves. I nose through discarded bags, hoping for something that won’t make my stomach twist in pain. Sometimes, I find kindness—a half-eaten sandwich left on a bench, a quiet person who sets down a bowl and whispers soft words I don't understand. I wag my tail, just in case.

Night is the worst. The cold seeps into my bones, and I curl up tight, hoping the wind won’t find me. I dream of warmth, of a soft place to rest, of hands that don’t hurt. I wake up to the sound of footsteps, my heart pounding. I run before I see if they are friend or foe.

I once had a friend. Another like me—skinny, tired, wary but willing to share a meal. We walked together for a time, noses to the ground, tails low but moving. Then one day, he didn’t wake up. I nudged him, licked his ear, waited. But he was gone, and I was alone again.

Still, I hope. Because I have seen dogs like me leave this life behind, lifted into warm cars, carried in gentle arms. I have watched them disappear through doors and never return to these streets. I wonder what it feels like—to belong, to be safe, to be wanted.

Maybe, one day, someone will see me. Not just as a stray, but as a soul. A friend. A dog with a name.

Character is how you treat others when no one is watching...please help when you can.
