Two years ago today, I got the call that this girl had made it through the night and could come home. We now know she suffered a rattlesnake bite just above her shoulder blades. Until last month, we had never seen a venomous snake here, though we knew they were around. Her recovery took months through which we monitored labs and slowly rebuilt her strength now, you'd never know it happened except for a few odd hairs where she was bitten.

In the coming weeks, we'll be reintroducing ourselves and dogs. Stay tuned to meet "the girl who lived!

I absolutely love watching the puppies I delivered into this world grow and thrive! Once in a while, the accomplishment comes from my own hands.

This sweet boy has been shown exclusively in AKC's Bred by Exhibitor class and on July 20, he earned his final point for his champion title followed by his first grand champion point the next day! To add an extra layer of special, Barkus earned these points at the St. Joe Kennel Club show which is where I attended my very first show as an Exhibitor with his mother. He accomplished this with limited showing, and I look forward to many more exciting accomplishments with this guy.

Like his brother, I am blessed to share this special boy with his family. My co-own families have been absolutely invaluable in their efforts with their dogs!

Although still pending AKC validation, it is my pleasure to introduce to the fancy CH Overwatch's My Brother's Keeper ATT.

Very late post, but no less proud...

On June 26, this dynamic duo became the first Overwatch bred AKC champions. Hot on his mama's heels, Show Drago has emerged and we couldn't be more proud! At 22 months old, this guy still has more growing and maturing ahead of him, but he's already made tremendous strides both in and out of the breed ring. It's been an absolute honor to watch this pair learn the ropes of showing and earn a broad variety of titles while showcasing their amazing bond.

And. They're. Still. Going.

Great co-owners are such a blessing and this guy's accomplishments are a testament to his human's dedication. Drago definitely would not be where he is if not for Bri!

There's just something about your first show dog.
On February 2, 2019, I stepped into the show ring for the first time in my life, and Jazzy did, too. A baby handler and baby showdog.

The years that followed brought innumerable life changes for both of us. Titles for her. Babies came (for both of us), and we fought to mend stubborn injuries that taunted us with appearing to resolve only to rear their head the moment I dared to hope (or enter a show).

Through it all, though, one thing remained... she has and always will be my rotten baby diva princess. On April 4, 2024, Show Jazzy showed up and showed out. It was as though we never stopped showing. She looked phenomenal, she FELT amazing, and she radiated everything we love about her- confidence, swagger, grace, power, stability, beauty. She was in her full glory and earned Best of Breed over TWO champion corsos, including her beautiful sister who earned her final grand champion point at the same time!

There isn't a day I'm not grateful that chose to take a chance on a complete novice by sharing this sweet, spicy, sassy work of art with me. She has already made an indelible mark on our fledgling program as foundation for future generations and in our hearts as the spoiled, beloved princess of the house. The support of a great mentor and even greater sh*tshow wrangler (I'm looking at you ) is invaluable and I'm so glad you were both there to share in our accomplishment after such a long road!

Shout out to last night's care team at K-State for placing compassion and ethics above "policy" and fear to make my guy's last moments as peaceful as possible. Thank you for letting me advocate for my guy to the very end.

Steel. Moosie. Biggest mama's boy in the world. I promised you no one would ever take you away from me, and when others tried to separate us in your last conscious minutes, I held to that promise. Moms got you, big man.

Finally, on we have Squire. Squire is an odd little creature. She has a kink tail and an extra dewclaw on both front feet. She's gray tabby with a smudge of calico across her back like it was an afterthought to add to her uniqueness. Squire is so certain she is a dog that she landed herself in more than one mouth before joining my pack.

She loves napping with the corso girls and wrestling with Stryker (when she's not doing cat things like climbing and knocking stuff off of wherever she can maraude). Best guess of her age puts her at almost 9 months old. She's the caboose to our and if Ygritte is the life of the party, Squire is definitely the silly string. But there's one in every family, right?

wouldn't be complete without Talon. After years if making doe eyes at her daddy from halfway across the continent, I took the leap and added this girl to my pack. I'd be lying if I said she hadn't aged me- Talon came along a year earlier than I had planned (Yes, Lord, I hear Your laugher). We haven't gotten to lay the same foundation that I've laid with the other puppies for a number of reasons. But honestly, I didn't think we'd even make it to this point.

About a month after she came home, Talon was playing in a safe space while I was away taking a loved one to a medical appointment. We knew we'd be gone longer than she could hold it in her crate and no one was available to take her potty, so she stayed in an outdoor puppy pen while we were gone- something we never normally do. We arrived home to a limp puppy barely able to raise her head. I immediately began treating her while calling every vet within an hour drive but we were a state away from home and the nearest vet who would see us was 40 minutes away. I made the drive in just over 20. diagnosed a probable and admitted my baby for care. We weren't sure she would make it through the night. Her back legs didn't work and she was beginning to bruise all over.

A day later I brought a very sick but alive puppy home and we drove back to Kansas. Slowly, she regained her strength. It took months for the anemia to resolve and her stamina to improve. Two weeks ago, we took a step I didn't think we would see into the show ring and my wiggly wiggled her way to a Reserve Winner placement in her very first show. Time will tell if her ordeal left aby lasting effects beyond a few white hairs that sprang from the spot she was bitten, but there's no questioning this girl is as tough as she is sweet.

Oh, Ygritte. You really are my crazy wild child. Fun fact- at 125 pounds, she's still sure she should fit on my chest like she did in the days when I worried she wouldn't make it. Ygritte was the smallest of the Ad Astra litter and struggled to get enough to eat in the beginning. She was just so tiny in such a big litter that she would wear herself out fighting to eat and lose weight instead of gaining. Even splitting and rotating feedings wasn't enough for her.

After a week or so of extra feedings, she was holding her own. At one year old now, she isn't just holding her own, she's making space. And noise. And bruises now and then 🤕🙃😆. She loves as big and loud and fiercely as she lives. She's truly "kissed by fire" and I can't wait to see her set the world aflame.

Turns out, you can't just have one well bred corso... meet Ember, our almost 4 year old Cane Corso. Ember is the epitome of devotion. She wants nothing more than the make me happy and loves to be the center of my attention. Where Jazzy excels at a variety of sports and loves to entertain with antics like zoomies through the barn hunt ring, Ember's favorite sports are things like rally and obedience where she gets my full attention.

Ember is fantastically versatile and thrives in farm life while easily switching to ahow/sport dog at the blink of an eye. She also makes an exceptional weighted blanket 😆 and is the best "Auntie Em" for puppies here.

And then came Steel. Steel didn't come to us as a puppy. When he was 5 years old, Steel's original mom suffered a catastrophic medical event and was not able to return home. He didn't know any world outside of his home with her, had very little experience with things like car rides, kids, and noises outside of the farm. Strangers terrified him (even the lady who came with hot dogs every day for a week and told us she lived in her van with 4 kids but he was so beautiful she just had to have him) and Steel circled us for hours.

His original mom had some dedicated friends looking out for him- one came, caught him and loaded him into the car with much more ease than we could have managed and the other provided as much history and medical information about Steel as she could. She worked tirelessly to save him and I couldn't be more grateful to her for all her efforts.

When Steel came home it was to foster and assess him. It became quickly evident that he was going to need a lot of support not just medically but mentally. If a home equipped to handle him surfaced, great, but I wasn't holding my breath. Extensive safety protocols were implemented immediately with Steel and as he settled in and decompressed he bonded tightly to me. It didn't take long to know he needed to be here and he was definitely staying.

We still have our struggles and his age is definitely showing lately. But even for all his struggles he's still his mama's boy.

Next in the pack for is Jazzy, OG Princess and Matriarch of the pack. Jazz is our almost 5 year old Cane Corso. She is mama to all either by parentage or by parenting- even Stryker isn't exempt from her bossiness or ear cleanings.

This girl doesn't know a stranger when we're out and about and has passed her confident, gregarious nature on to her offspring. She loves to work in any capacity, often giving her all plus some. She's been a phenomenal breed ambassador, winning hearts and minds of both animals and people who were initially quite skeptical of her breed.

Happy National Puppy Day! I figured today was as good a day as any to (re)introduce the starting with Stryker.

Stryker is our farm dog special- a "selectively bred herding mongrel" who just turned 6 years old. He really is the farm jack of all trades! His resume includes working larger livestock (bulls, hogs, horses, goats), herding small stock like ducks and chickens, snatching and dispatching rodents in the barn, helping teach and socialize puppies we've raised and cuddling up to be the best buddy a kid could want. Stryker does it all!

A picture is worth a thousand words...

shared these images a while back and while they were specifically referring to livestock guardian dogs like Anatolian Shepherds, the same applies to other breeds as well.

I often hear "I just want a pet, I don't need all that" from people considering a puppy. On any given day you can find social media posts from breeders who don't need health testing because they work their dogs/have decades of experience/gurantee to replace puppies with issues so if there were a problem they'd know. These radiographs are the comparison between the two.

Yes, hip dysplasia has a huge environmental component. Yes, there are also numerous genes that can manifest dysplasia if you wind up with just the wrong combination which is why you can still end up with problems from parents who didn't have them. But you can't make ethical, informed decisions about selecting pairings without knowing the cold, hard facts... imagine what breeding two dogs with hips like the one on the left could produce.

That couple hundred dollars saved by supporting a breeder who doesn't health test could very well cost thousands in care and treatment the end. This has been my Monday Morning TED Talk.

This girl is aaaaaall legs right now and appears to be a Mashup between Marmaduke, Tigger, and Bambi 🤣 her sweetness and honest work ethic are only surpassed by her athleticism. I may make fun of her, but she's clearly on track to make me eat my words someday!

FASTCAT points and rankings updated today and the couldn't be more proud of the top 3 corsos rocking the rankings today! We'd also like to take the time to celebrate this handsome fella who added a few extra letters to his name and is halfway to a few more.

He is now officially Blake's Obsidian Baba Yaga RN BCAT RATN CGCA CGCU ATT and is ranked #27 in the nation in FASTCAT placing him in the top 5% of German Shepherds in this sport in 2022!

Jinx was introduced to FASTCAT one year ago. He has run exactly 10 FASTCAT races at only two events a full year apart. In those 10 races, Jinx has topped his best time every time, earned his first title and half the necessary points to his second title, and his best is yet to come! His current ranked speed (average of his 3 fastest times) in this 100 yard dash is just under 28mph. We're super excited to see his progress in the year to come!

As our first winter storm rolls in, it's impossible to believe that just last week it was warm enough for these guys to romp around the yard, splash in puddles, and spend a day hanging out eating carrots and playing with enrichment toys in the puppy pen while I worked.

I'm seeing so many weight and feeding posts lately. This isn't the polished info graphic I'd like to eventually create, but I'm hoping it might help.

These photos were taken of littermates at 6 weeks old. At this age, puppies were being fed multiple times per day and allowed to eat as much as they would comfortably consume. What I want to call attention to is the obvious difference in these puppies' stature. The black puppy is obviously bigger, right?

Nope.

These puppies weighed the same at time of photo. This is the danger of comparing weight of one dog versus the other. One puppy is appropriate weight, the other is fat and even in puppies this young, being overweight is a burden on the joints. You can see how much impact that fat belly has on his hips for instance, by how much his topline drops- his hind legs are spread wider to accommodate his belly.

Feed the dog in front of you with a focus on maintaining an appropriate body condition from the very beginning...because even littermates can vary enough in bone structure and general stature that two dogs of the same weight will have entirely different body composition.

These two were happy to help with chores this morning. Steel doesn't generally chase, just waits for the girls to make their fly by. Today has been a good day for him. He's in another cycle of hair growth but I've noticed his erythema multiforme is flaring again. I'm also seeing more telltale signs of issues in his hips and forepaws from subtle self soothing behaviors to more visible things like bunny hopping and limb trembling. Check out the puppy enrichment center we built yesterday! The pen helps protect little puppies from big germs while allowing them to explore the world around them. Their enrichment cube features SodaPup (made in Colorado) rubber and nylon toys, soft toys from Kohl's and other puppy toys from PetWorld in Lawrence, KS! This is a super fun age where puppies are fearless and absorb everything like little sponges. Oh, Steel! 😆🥰 I don't post this guy a ton... I wouldn't trade him for the world, he was meant to be here, but he is the absolute depiction of why it is critical to make sure your puppy is coming from a knowledgeableand reputable program. He doesn't enjoy being out and about like the other dogs do, and as he gets older I really worry about the impact of that kind of stress in his preexisting conditions. His CDA has regressed a little, but it's pretty stable. He has developed an autoimmune disorder that causes huge weeping sores all over his body including inside his ears (the ear ones really make him miserable). They receed and then flare again and it is a lot to cope with, but he's still my happy, sweet boy so we're still hanging tough. Sadly, these conditions could have largely been prevented with basic good breeding practices. This is my absolute favorite time of year to desensitize and socialize dogs. With young, unsure dogs I feel like we make faster progress and have better results by pairing them with a more confident dog in the beginning to model correct behavior.
