We’ve talked a lot about back-to-school this month, but we’d be remiss if we didn’t mention safety. Keep those backpacks and lunchboxes out of reach. Top school-related toxins include:

⚠️ Snacks: grapes and raisins, macadamia nuts, onions, moldy food and gum (which can contain xylitol)
⚠️ Common medications: ADHD medications, albuterol inhalers, OTC medications such as NSAIDs and acetaminophen
⚠️ Science or craft projects: baking soda, play dough or salt dough and homemade slime, especially in high amounts
⚠️ Cold packs used to keep food cool
Illicit drugs and synthetic ma*****na

New back-to-school routine in full swing? Keep an eye out for signs of separation anxiety and depression. In dogs, this could look like:

👀 Digging or scratching in an attempt to escape
👀 Excessive howling, whining or barking
👀 Destructive chewing
👀 A lapse in potty training
👀 Mood changes

Although separation anxiety is less common in cats, these signs could be cause for concern:

👀 Trembling
👀 Withdrawing, hiding and trying to escape
👀 Loss of appetite
👀 Mood changes
👀 An upset stomach resulting in diarrhea

If your pet is showing signs of anxiety or depression, please get in touch. Your veterinary team can discuss treatment options ranging from behavioral training to anti-anxiety medication.

Transitions can be tough for our furry friends, especially when it means a switch from long, sunny days playing with their best buds to a quiet, empty house.

Try getting your pet accustomed to your household's new back-to-school schedule in advance:

📚 Set an alarm and wake up early, ensure your pet gets plenty of exercise and affection, then test out short absences that you gradually increase leading up to the new schedule.
📚 Some pets appreciate background noise from a radio or TV while their humans are away.
📚 Distract your pet with a puzzle or treat toys as you leave the house.

With Labor Day weekend upon us, it’s time to share some important pet safety tips from the ASPCA:

☀️ Avoid heat exhaustion. Make sure your pets have access to plenty of shade and water.
🔥 Guard the grill and bonfires. Keep an eye on your pets to make sure they don’t come in contact with any flames or hot surfaces.
✨ Don’t forget about the fireworks. As we’ve shared in the past, pets and fireworks aren’t a great mix. Shelter your cat or dog from the noise to keep them safe and calm.
