Do I Need a Scorebook to Show in UDC Conformation Shows?

A UDC scorebook/registration is NOT required to show in a UDC conformation event! If you have a Doberman registered with the AKC or other FCI recognized registry, you can try out a United Doberman Club conformation event without registering your Doberman with the UDC. If you find that your dog does well and might make the grade to earn the UDC championship, you will need to register your dog before the UDC Championship will be awarded.

The United Doberman Club Conformation Championship is a three-phase championship, requiring a passing Adult Temperament Test, three Challenge Certificates (CCs) awarded by at least two different judges, and a performance title such as the AKC CD, UDC CD, or IGP BH. A complete list of the requirements and accepted performance titles can be found in the UDC Breed Manual, available on the UDC website.

Your dog can earn these qualifications before you register your dog with the UDC if you prefer to wait. When you show your dog at a UDC conformation event, your dog's UDC accomplishments are officially recorded by the UDC using his/her FCI recognized registry number. When you register your dog, you will be issued a scorebook and UDC registration number for your dog. You can send proof of non-UDC accomplishments required for the championship, such as an AKC CD, at the time that you register your dog.

Visit our website for additional information on the UDC Carolina Summer Conformation Shows, coming soon to Durham, North Carolina, on June 8-9, 2024. Entries close 12:00 NOON EDT on May 29!

Getting Started with Dog Shows - Why Should I Show My Dog at a United Doberman Club Show?

If you have ever wondered what it would be like to show your dog, a United Doberman Club Conformation Show is a great place to try it for the first time. Why?

United Doberman Club shows are single breed events for Dobermans only. They are usually small, and everyone there LOVES Dobermans, and most tend not to eyeball your Doberman as a potential "troublemaker".

United Doberman Club shows are informal. While you might want to dress up in more than jeans and a t-shirt to show your dog, many exhibitors wear comfortable slacks and a casual shirt in the UDC conformation ring. Don't be surprised to see a variety of exhibitor styles.

United Doberman Club shows are beginner friendly. While there are a few very experienced breeders and exhibitors attending, there are many new, non-professional handlers in the ring. Exhibitors tend to cheer each other on, and offer helpful suggestions when appropriate. Judges are very patient with exhibitors, as they understand that most are NOT professional handlers.

United Doberman Club shows embrace the working heritage of the breed. Many of the dogs you may see in the ring have performance and working titles in addition to conformation accomplishments.

The dogs are judged to the American standard (which is very similar to the FCI/DV standard). While there is only one Best of Breed in a given show, multiple dogs can earn Challenge Certificates toward their UDC Championship in a single show if the judge deems them to be of championship quality.

Exhibitors receive a written critique of their dog from the judge, and the top four placements in the class receive a verbal critique given to the exhibitor and to the spectators. It is a great way to learn about the application of the written Doberman standard to the living dog!

The United Doberman Club Conformation Championship for Dobermans

The mission of the United Doberman Club is to preserve and protect the Doberman Pinscher and its heritage as a working dog, doing everything possible to perfect its natural qualities. One of the strategies for fulfilling this mission is to conduct events that promote the Doberman as a working breed, and to record and issue titles. The UDC recognizes outstanding Dobermans by awarding the UDC Conformation Championship to worthy individuals.

The UDC Conformation Championship is a notable three-phase accomplishment. While any AKC or FCI registered Doberman may enter a UDC temperament test and conformation show, to finalize the requirements for a UDC Conformation Champion a dog must be UDC registered (have a scorebook), earn three Challenge Certificates (CCs) under at least two different judges, pass the adult UDC temperament test, and earn a performance title such as an IGP BH-VT or AKC CD. The owner does NOT have to be a member of the UDC to register the dog and obtain a scorebook, and all valid wins and titles will be used to determine the dog’s eligibility for a UDC Championship at the time the dog is registered.

Because the temperament test is a requirement for the UDC conformation championship, each UDC sanctioned conformation event must offer an official temperament test prior to the start of the conformation show(s) so that every dog entered has a chance to take the temperament test appropriate for their age and class entered. There is only one temperament test offered per conformation event, regardless of the number of shows featured at a single UDC sanctioned conformation event.

If a dog fails the temperament test required to enter, the dog and handler may still show in the conformation show(s), earn a class placing and awards, and receive a conformation rating and critique from the judge, but the judge cannot award a CC, and the dog is not eligible for a “Best” award in the show.
Old North State Working Dobermans is a member club of the UDC, and our upcoming conformation “Carolina Summer Shows” cluster coming June 8-9, 2024, features a UDC temperament test and three conformation shows. It is an opportunity for Doberman lovers to gather and learn about the Doberman and how we can work together to preserve the characteristics of our breed that we treasure.

Finally home from the 2024 UDC National Specialty and IGP Championship! It was a really fun trip, because Tyler and I took the RV and three dogs, along with his motorcycle. He was able to ride almost all week long while I did dog activities.

We arrived in the Salem area on Sunday evening. I was honored to be asked to evaluate the dogs entered in conformation in the UDC Temperament Test, so on Monday, I drove over to the show site to prepare for the Temperament Test to be held early Tuesday morning. Because the area had experienced a lot of rain during the previous two weeks, I was concerned that it might be difficult to layout the test field. It took a little while to figure it out, but with help from Chris Wells and Katie Schwarzwaelder, we got it done, and the testing went off without any issues. There were four dogs present of my breeding that had to be tested, and they were evaluated fairly by Brandy Billington and Mike Firestone.

Unfortunately, my Grayson didn't pass the test on this day, so while I showed him in the conformation shows, and he received E (excellent) conformation ratings in both shows, he was not able to be awarded a CC (Challenge Certificate) toward his UDC championship. In order to become a UDC Champion, a dog has to pass the temperament test, must earn a performance title, and must received three CCs under at least two different judges. So Grayson got some good ring experience. 😕

My Pearl, who is already a UDC Champion, passed the adult temperament test a long time ago, so she didn't have to retake the test. I entered her in the Veteran class, and she was awarded Best of Opposite to Best Veteran. I think she liked being in the show ring again.

Grayson and Lily each earned their Canine Good Citizen designation during the week.

I had entered Lily for her FPr3 (level 3 tracking title) weeks ago, but during the week decided that she really wasn't quite ready for that level of competition, so I elected not to turn in my scorebook on draw night. Instead, Tyler and I drove to the Pittsburg airport to pick up Camilla Rönnqvist Diragos, our IGP judge.

I was able to apprentice the UDC Breed Survey, and now have evaluated 13 of the 20 dogs required to become a UDC Breed Survey judge.

On Saturday, I got to watch my friends Carol Wolfe with her girl Cleopatra and Kim Grimm with her girl Elle (both Hurin x Lila) in their tracking entry. So proud of both of them to enter a national event with their very first sport dog. The wind was a brutal 25-35 mph, and temperatures were hovering around 40 degrees, so the tracking conditions were cold and difficult.

On Sunday, Tyler left early with the RV, and I stayed back to watch Kim and Elle in their UPr1. They are a beautiful team!

I sure hope the 2025 National will be held close enough to attend!
