Come meet our Furry Friday Friends:

Obie: A playful and energetic one-year-old cat who's outgrown the kitten phase but isn't yet a mellow adult. Obie turns anything into a toy and would thrive in a family with children to keep him entertained! 🐱

Roger Woods: This sweet 17-week-old kitten loves to chat, especially when he's hungry—which is always! Roger is ready to fill your home with love and conversation. 🐈

Mason and Marshall: Adorable 17-week-old littermates looking for a loving home. These brothers are twice the fun and double the cuddles! 🐾🐾

Chuck: A sweet 17-week-old pup with a heart full of love. Chuck is eager to find a family to share his playful spirit and affectionate nature. 🐶

As Betty White once said, "Animals are near and dear to my heart, and I've devoted my life to trying to improve their lives." Let's honor her memory by giving these wonderful animals the loving homes they deserve.

Pumpkin 🎃 is good year round here…

Actually our Pumpkin has called us home for 3 years! He’s 4 and originally was very timid and would hide from everything… he’s a testament to what some time and patience can achieve! Slow and steady right!?

When I walked into the walk around today to see who would be a willing participant in hat wearing- Pumpkin was the ONLY cat that didn’t blink when he saw what was coming…orrrrrrr maybe because he realizes he’s watched me dressing up his roommates for 3 years- he might as well give up 🤷🏻‍♀️

Anywhoo- he’s done here and would make a great addition to your home- added bonus- he likes dress up!

Our girl Myrtle here snatched up this pink cowgirl hat and demanded we take a picture to share.

Myrtle is hitting the scales at slightlyyyyy under the
20 lb mark. She’s 8 years old and this cowgirl is ready to lasso your heart!💜 She’s good with other dogs and doesn’t seem to care about cats. 🐈‍⬛ She probably won’t be a good placement for an apartment- only because she does bark when she knows you’re in the next room and she isn’t 😆

HAPPY NATIONAL BAGEL DAY! 🥯🥯🥯🥯

Our middle aged man Cookie can be visited any day here 12-4… or Friday til 6!

He spends his days lounging around here and you can often find him claiming the first bed that gets fresh linens in the morning! He loves to nuzzle you when you give him attention and will let you know when he’s had enough. He loves his toys and tolerates the other cats he shares the shelter with.

If your life includes laying about all day and you’d like some support while you do it- he’s your guy.

If your life forces you to work and you want to come home to a free loader that’s been napping all day- he’s your guy.

Have you ever wanted a bird? but cannot have a bird? Get a Finch! Finch is about 6 years old and came our way from Newark, NJ! He has been here about a year waiting for the right family to come along. Finch is super selective of other cats, so he would prefer to be only the cat in the home. We aren't sure how he is with dogs since we have never seen him interact with one. Finch loves to play. When he isn't playing, you can find him curled up on a blanket.

Hey folks!

Simon here! My brother Spooky and I are new to Walden and are EAGER to head to a home asap! We’re about 10 months and while we hear they do not like using breed descriptions here- We loved our mama and we know she was a basset hound. So we have short legs and long bodies. Unfortunately we didn’t get her ears. Don’t let our stature fool you - whoever our daddy was provided us with true athletic ability. We can romp and run with the best of them.

Here’s Manny! This handsome 4 year old chunky hunk is the perfect man whose new years resolution has been to get into a new relationship (ahem…) with someone who will help him work on his fitness. This dude is weighing in at 56 pounds and should be about 10 errrrr 15 pounds or so less….
He’s got the biggest floppy curled tail and look at those perfect teeth! Literally could be the poster child for dog dentures!

Meet Ernest…

Crazy 8s!

He’s 8 years old and 8 pounds and we’re absolutely smitten with this dude!

We’re sharing this guys amped up face so there are no surprises in home when this delightful gremlin switches from cute to this! He looks nothing like this in his normal state- but this photo makes us laugh because who hasn’t been caught off guard with a picture right!?

He’s literally perfection.

He likes to hop into an open lap so be warned- if it fits it sits- no need for a blanket he will curl up for all the warmth you require.

He’s great with like sized pups or maybe very mindful bigger ones- he’s pretty petite so we just want to make sure he doesn’t get umm overlooked accidentally in a big dog home.

He’s quiet- here at least- he’s been hanging out with Myrtle here and she’s definitely a little more chatty- maybe he will end up that way in home- but here- she’s doing all the yapping for him.

Recently we were approached at an event by a lovely lady… she was adamant to have a discussion with her frustrations with the shelter/rescue system.

She shared that she was denied by multiple shelters and rescues due to her age. She shared her age with us and asked why after owning many pets, having remarkable references,owning her home and having free time since she’s long retired would make her less than a perfect candidate to share her home with a pet needing one?

We were a little taken aback- in our eyes she’d be an absolute treasure of an owner. Actually we adore adopters that check all the boxes she listed.

We gave her our run down- we will adopt to anyone regardless of age- we ask EVERYONE what the plans are for the pet if they become unable to care for it. We have had extended families come to make sure all are comfortable with the pet.

We URGE people that are in their more settled part of life to come see us.

Even if adopting isn’t in your cards- foster! You can reap the same rewards- for a shorter time commitment. And we provide everything.

Volunteer with us! Some of our pets just want someone to sit with them- grab a book or even a blanket and snuggle up in a quiet space here with some cats.

When life settles down and the quiet is too quiet- we encourage you to continue having pets in your life. They provide companionship, excitement and a reason for routine.

All of us need that regardless of the number we are.

Gilly is doing great! She made fast friends with our dog and 2 cats. She is very playful and loving. She and Chloe, formerly Beast, who we adopted from you in January, play all of the time. Our Story

Since 1974, the staff and volunteers of the Humane Society of Walden (HSW) have provided quality care for many orphaned pets while they wait for their forever homes. The Humane Society of Walden is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to helping orphaned cats and dogs. Our no kill safe haven serves the communities of Montgomery, Walden, Maybrook, Pine Bush, Shawangunk, and Mamakating. However, if we have the space we will not turn away pets in need. Shelter staff sees that each of our animals receive the very best possible care. Our haven has dog kennels with outside access. Thanks to the staff and volunteers the dog kennels were completely renovated in the Summer of 2017. Outside kennels and an onsite dog park provide space for the dogs to get exercise. Adoptability training classes are held weekly and with volunteer participation dogs are learning basic commands. In 2016 the Walk in the Park Dog Walk Program was introduced and was an instant success. Volunteers are matched with a dog and meet offsite at Winding Hills Park where they enjoy time away from the shelter(weather permitting). HSW has several cat rooms; General Walk around, FIV+ room and FeLv+ room (Leukemia). Unless medically necessary (on a special diet, in need of daily meds etc), most cats are free roaming and all enjoy the pleasure of scratching posts, comfy beds, and toys! The General Walk Around allows access to the outside in a completely enclosed pen with many lofty perches.

The Humane Society of Walden believes that all animals have a natural right to humane treatment including proper care, respect and safe shelter. Our primary mission is to provide care while finding permanent, loving homes for the many animals that come to our door.
