Take Action for a Strong Elliott State Research Forest!

Shortcomings must be addressed in Elliot's draft Forest Management plan. Send in your comments today and before Nov. 8 for your comment to be considered!

It has been a long slog to get where we are with the Elliott State Forest — the incredible 83,000-acre rainforest tucked into the Oregon Coast Range northeast of Coos Bay. Oregon State University's College of Forestry, which leaders of Oregon chose to be the contractor of the newly created, publicly owned Elliott State Research Forest, has recently put out for public review and comment a draft Forest Management Plan that will guide planning on the Elliott for decades to come. However, shortcomings must be addressed before a strong, durable, conservation-based plan can be presented to the State Land Board for adoption in December.

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing today of Chief Doc Slyter, Confederated Tribes of Coos, Lower Umpqua and Siuslaw Indians, who has been a valued member of the Elakha Alliance Board of Directors for the past three years.

We will miss his gentle thoughtful counsel, cheerful spirit, and welcoming heart. He graced us with the harmony of his flute in-between breaks during our Board meetings, which all of us cherish now more than ever. Chief Slyter is in our hearts as he walks on.

He lives on through his wife Debbie of 50 years, and his two sons, Tyler and Scott.
