Message of the week!!

Parvo is an infectious virus that commonly causes severe illness in young and unvaccinated dogs. It primarily affects the body’s rapidly dividing cells, meaning the intestinal tract and bone marrow are the most affected. Heart muscle cells of very young puppies can also be damaged by parvovirus. Although parvovirus is most common in puppies and adolescent dogs, it can also affect adult or senior dogs, especially if they are left unvaccinated. We recommend four rounds of combination shots three weeks apart starting at 6 weeks old with a rabies shot given around 12 weeks of age. These shots protect against the parvo virus, canine distemper virus, canine adenovirus, canine parainfluenza, leptospirosis, coronavirus, and hepatitis once all four rounds have been administered properly. Like most vaccines, these build up immunity and require multiple rounds to be fully protected and then yearly boosters to keep up that healthy immune response. Giving only one or two rounds of a combination can still leave your new puppy at risk for developing ailments such as parvo. Until your pet is fully vaccinated, it is important to be cautious of where they spend their time playing and romping around as most of these illnesses are found in the ground and in dirty water sources. If you have any questions please call us at 479-637-2740.

Message of the week!

Foxtails have been an ongoing issue for us at the clinic the last couple of weeks. We have seen them in between dog's feet, around their necks, eyes, etc. Foxtails are a weed-type grass that can cause serious problems for dogs. Foxtails can cause the following problems in dogs. Discharge, swelling, abscesses, death, and pain. Foxtails can attach to your dog's coat, burrow into their ears, nose, and paw pads. They can even find their way into your dog's eyes causing them to squint and be very painful. The easiest way to prevent your dog getting into foxtails is keeping them out of overgrown grassy areas, keeping your dog groomed properly, and if your dog is an outside dog, checking them daily for foxtails. Below is an example of a dog's feet that is invested with foxtails. If you have any questions or concerns, please call the clinic at 479-637-2740.
