Building Trust with our Blue Tongue Skink! π¦π
Joel's hands-on training with our feisty blue tongue skink isn't just about teaching him that humans aren't a threat. It's also about showing that we're not fazed by his little nips! Trust is a journey, and every interaction, even the bitey ones, brings us a step closer.
Watch as we continue paving this two-way street of understanding.
π₯ Check out this amazing shot of our panther chameleon in action! π¦π₯
Ever wondered how the panther chameleon catches its prey so effortlessly? Here's a quick dive into some fascinating chameleon facts:
1οΈβ£ Speedy Strike: A chameleon's tongue can rocket out of its mouth at speeds of over 1000 mph. Blink and you might miss it!
2οΈβ£ Built-In Harpoon: At the tip of their tongues, chameleons have a special sticky, almost honey like bulb that acts like a suction cup, ensuring that their prey has little chance of escaping once targeted.
3οΈβ£ Precision Hunter: The chameleon's tongue can extend to approximately twice the length of its body, allowing it to snatch prey from a distance.
4οΈβ£ Specialized Muscles: The chameleonβs tongue mechanism isn't just muscle; it's a complex system of bones, collagen, and muscle working in harmony. The acceleration is so intense that it generates G-forces 256 times more powerful than what we experience on Earth's surface!
So the next time you watch our chameleon nab a horn worm, know that you're witnessing one of nature's most refined hunting tools in action! πβ€οΈ

Sand Skinks are master burrowers! They have specialized adaptations, such as shovel-like snouts and powerful front legs, allowing them to dig deep tunnels in sandy habitats. Sand Skinks are also tiny yet mighty! These little lizards measure just 4-6 inches long, making them perfectly suited for their sandy homes. Their slender bodies and short legs help them maneuver through the dunes with ease. #Zoology #MicroZoo #SandSkink #Reptiles #GrandRapidsMI #WalkerMI #Educational #FamilyFun #ExperienceZoology #ComingThisSummer

ππ Say Hello to Our - Western Harvester Ants! ππ
Harvester ants are much more than what meets the eye - they are tiny architects, robust foragers, and resilient survivors, all packed into a small form! While these ants arenβt native to our Michigan landscape, they have so much to teach us about resilience, teamwork, and ecosystem roles. Here are some fascinating facts about them:
πΉ Ant Architects: These tiny builders construct intricate tunnel networks stretching up to 15 feet deep into the earth. In their native habitats, these tunnels help maintain temperature and humidity levels, offering a glimpse into the antsβ ecological intelligence.
πΉ Foraging Force: Harvester ants get their name from their impressive ability to βharvestβ seeds, their primary food source. These ants are natureβs unsung heroes, playing a vital role in seed dispersal and helping maintain the health and diversity of their desert habitats.
πΉ Bite and Sting: Donβt let their small size fool you! Harvester ants are known for their painful sting, as potent as that of many much larger creatures. Itβs their way of protecting their colonies from threats. But donβt worry, they wonβt bite unless they feel threatened.
πΉ Life Span: The queen of a Western Harvester Ant colony can live for up to 15 years! The worker ants will have a much shorter life span. This can vary depending on the workers responsibility to the colony but generally last a few weeks to a couple of months to nearly a year!
Weβre keeping these ants for educational purposes, studying their habits and lifestyle. Itβs important to note that while we admire these ants, they are an invasive species in Michigan and must be handled responsibly. Theyβre not to be released into the local environment, where they could disrupt our native ecosystems.
Stay tuned for more updates about our fascinating guests, and remember to respect these little guys and their crucial role in our ecosystem. L
