Centennial Seppala Expedition!

You may remember learning about “The Great Race of Mercy,” which took place in January 1925 in the remote village of Nome, Alaska. They experienced an outbreak of diphtheria. The only way to get medicine to the village during the blizzard of the century was by dogsled teams! A relay was set up to cover the miles from Nenana to Nome. One team in particular, owned by Leonhard Seppala with his famed leader, Togo, mushed over 261 miles in the relay and risked the treacherous Norton Bay sea ice twice in the effort!

January 2025 marks the one-hundred-year anniversary of that act of heroism! To commemorate this event, CKC will be sponsoring Jonathan Hayes as he leads a dogsled expedition and retraces the route during the darkest and coldest time of year across Alaska’s frozen wilderness to the village of Nome. We can’t wait to share Jonathan’s journey along the way with his team of Seppala Siberian Sleddogs, the registered descendants of Leonhard Seppala’s team!
