Some very important tips from our friends at CVCA for pet safety during these extreme temperatures!
Summer Safety For Pets:
☀️ NEVER leave your animals alone in a parked vehicle. Not even for a minute! Not even with the car running and air conditioner on. On a warm day, temperatures inside a vehicle can rise rapidly to dangerous levels. On an 85-degree day, for example, the temperature inside a car with the windows opened slightly can reach 102 degrees within 10 minutes. After 30 minutes, the temperature will reach 120 degrees. Your pet may suffer irreversible organ damage or it can lead to fatal heat stroke.
☀️ Pets can get dehydrated quickly, so MAKE SURE they have plenty of fresh, clean water when it’s hot or humid outdoors. In heat waves, add ice to water when possible. Tree shade and tarps are ideal to protect from sun because they don't obstruct air flow. A doghouse does not provide relief from heat—in fact, it makes it worse.
☀️ When the temperature is very high, don’t let your dog linger on HOT ASPHALT. Being so close to the ground, your pooch’s body can heat up quickly, and sensitive paw pads can burn. Limit exercise to early morning or evening hours, and be especially careful with pets with white-colored ears, who are more susceptible to skin cancer. (Dogs' temperatures should not reach over 104 DEGREES).
☀️ KNOW THE SYMPTOMS of overheating in pets, which include excessive panting or difficulty breathing, increased heart and respiratory rate, drooling, glazed eyes, excessive thirst, lethargy, stupor or even collapse.
☀️ Commonly used rodenticides or insecticides can be harmful to cats and dogs, so keep them out of reach. Call your Veterinarian or ASPCA Animal POISON CONTROL Center at (888) 426-4435 if you suspect your animal ingested a poisonous substance.
☀️ REMEMBER that food and drink commonly found at barbecues can be poisonous to pets.
☀️ Please leave pets at home when you head out to Fourth of July celebrations, and NEVER use fireworks around pets.
These simple precautions will not only protect your furry companions, but will allow you to enjoy your summer with peace of mind. Always reach out to a Veterinarian for any concerns or questions. Stay cool! 😎
