26 years ago today Tina and I had one of the happiest days of our lives when Colleen was born. She grew up so fast and before you know it she brought into the world two of her own fantastic kids. We are so proud of the young lady and mother she has become. Have a fantastic birthday Colleen! Love, Dad.

Lilly got her first bath today. Like all good horses she dried herself off with mud. 🤪

Today we had to say goodbye to Rowdy. He was to young to go and the barn will never be the same without him.

How cold is too cold to ride?

Let’s start with your horse’s respiratory tract. The horse’s respiratory tract is designed to warm and humidify air by the time air reaches the lungs. Intense exercise (anything more than a walk) speeds up and deepens breaths so that air is not as warm or humid when it reaches the lungs which can cause damage to the lower respiratory tracts. It has been discovered in multiple studies that respiratory tracts in horses can become damaged by breathing cold air starting around 23 degrees Fahrenheit, damage to lower respiratory tracts was found 48 hours after exercise, including elevated white blood cell counts and inflammatory proteins as well as narrowing of the tracts.

Moving on to your horse’s cardiovascular system (heart). The cardiovascular system react to cold by increasing the blood pressure and heart rate. It also reduces the amount of blood that flows closest to the skin in order to preserve core body temperature. The reduced blood flow to the skin can lead to frostbite. This lack of blood leads to the eventual freezing and death of skin tissue in the affected areas. Again, it is probably wise to reduce the intensity of your ride so that your horse’s heart does not have to work so hard.

And last but not least your horse’s muscles and joints. Muscles take longer to warm up in the cold weather and arthritic joints may ache and need more time to loosen up. During exercise in the cold, your horse’s muscles require more energy at a faster rate in order for them to function as they would under less extreme conditions. The cold temperature effects the temperature of your horse’s muscles greatly affecting the muscles’ ability to contract. This can leave muscles more vulnerable to fatigue and strains, as cold muscles are less elastic and don’t absorb shock or impact as well as warm muscles. Cold muscles are also less responsive to signals from the nervous system so movements are less coordinated.

So in conclusion it is best to avoid exercise (trotting, cantering and jumping) when temperatures are under 20 degrees F, stick with walking and make sure to properly cool your horse down.

Due to the continued low temps, lessons will be cancelled again tomorrow. Horses have been going out in the morning and coming in early afternoon. Hopefully this cold passes quickly and we can see everyone again soon! Stay warm!

Our Story

Creekside Equicenter was started in 2006 as a dream and has become living proof that hard work pays off.

Tina Prout has always dreamt of becoming a well known horse trainer with a barn of her very own. She grew up riding most days and training any horse she could get her hands on. She learned from watching other trainers, speaking to other trainers, clinics, and also trial and error. Tina began her riding career training western pleasure and gaming events. In her 20s, she discovered her love of jumping and as built her barn around it. Today, she focuses on integrating dressage into her students jumping and believes that this is the best way to get communicate with our horses. Tina is very well known and loved as a trainer and friend by many that have been acquainted with her. She continues to spread her love of horses with other children and adults through lessons, 4-H, and even through her horse shows. Tina Prout hopes that someday, everyone will have had the chance to experience what it truly is like to be one, horse and rider.

Colleen Prout is the daughter of trainer, Tina Prout. She also grew up around horses and developed her own love of horses. She has done gaming events, jumping, and dressage for most of her life. Colleen especially loves jumping. She wants to ignite the passion to jump in every child she can. Colleen started training at Creekside about 3 years ago, working alongside her mother as a team. They pride themselves on their family-friendly barn and welcome anyone to join them. Tina and Colleen use the same training techniques and utilize each other to reach every student the best way that they can. Colleen hopes that one day she can be half the trainer that Tina has become.

Creekside is a place where children can come and learn how to ride horses at their own pace. It is a safe place, where kids can be themselves and open up. Horses help with so many things and they provide us with comfort we sometimes didn’t even know we needed. People from all ages can further as a human through the touch of a horse, if only one allows it.
