This video is a little out of the ordinary from our videos we usually share but found it very INTERESTING & INSPIRATIONAL! While watching College Basketball Conference Tournaments this past week this video about Benton's Smoky Mountain Country Hams aired on the SEC Network this past Thursday.
๐บ๐ธ Bentonโs Smoky Mountain Country Hams are slow cured using salt, brown sugar, and sodium nitrite and typically aged 9-10 months, though hams are available 1 year and older. This time-honored practice dates back to the era of our forefathers, when the preparation and preservation of meat was a way of life and sustenance. Although the hands of time and technology have sculpted many aspects of our modern world, at Bentonโs Smoky Mountain Country Hams we have upheld the traditional dry-curing process and are striving to produce world class country hams and bacon.
There business was started in 1947 by the late Albert H. Hicks, a dairy farmer who began curing and selling country hams out of a painted block building. Allan Benton and his employees have honed the dry-curing of hams and bacon into a culinary art and have catapulted the products from a simple breakfast mainstay into the world of gourmet cooking, where they have been praised for their characteristic flavor.
Bentonโs Country Hams and Bacon are available either unsmoked or hickory-smoked. Hickory smoking is performed in a small, wood stove smokehouse behind the business, imparting a distinct smoked flavor that many customers prefer. There products make excellent gifts and can be shipped anywhere in the United States!

First Presbyterian Church of Kernersville, NC First is sometimes referred to as "The Egg Church" because it has been famous for its chocolate covered, either peanut butter or coconut flavored Easter Eggs for almost 35 years. For eight weeks a volunteer crew of church members and friends from throughout the community gather to mix, mold, dip, and wrap chocolate eggs.
How did the Egg Ministry get started? In 1990, while struggling to pay off the mortgage on the new fellowship hall at the church, Donna Myers, a former Pennsylvanian and a First Presbyterian Church member, obtained permission from a church in Pennsylvania to use their recipe for chocolate covered Easter eggs. After trial and error by Donna Myers and Norma Sukeleather, a means of raising funds to pay off the church debt was formed. In 1999, The church decided to continue making the eggs to help the Kernersville community and began the Egg Ministry
For three days a week volunteers will gather in the church Fellowship Hall for about two and a half hours on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday to make the delicious chocolate eggs. Each egg is made from scratch and goes through a three-day process, from being mixed until wrapped in shiny foil paper to then be sold for one dollar! These volunteers, mostly retired church members and community volunteers, enjoy the time spent together producing a product that benefits the Kernersville community: Among the daily volunteers are often police officers, EMTs, school personnel, firefighters, town officials, as well as longtime supporters of the ministry.

๐ค A few KEY TIPS when you are calling around pricing mulch! Make sure to ASK WHAT SIZE SCOOP they are selling. The price may sound great until you find out its for a half yard scoop vs a full scoop. Here at Walkertown Mill Farm Lawn & Garden we sell all of our bulk products by the 1 YARD SCOOP. If you have purchased mulch previously in bags just as a visual aid, a yard is equivalent to 27, one cubic foot bags! Buying in bulk is MUCH CHEAPER!
To figure how much mulch you need use the simple formula of length x width divided by 81 will always equal a depth of 4โ for any product. Divide that number by 2 and that will equal 2โ depth.
If you want to do something other than a 2โ or 4โ depth here is the formula:
Depth in inches divided by 12 x your Square footage divided by 27. That will determine how many yards it will take.
If you donโt know your square footage of your area it is simply length x width. Then you plug this number into the equation above. You can also call us with your square footage and depth and we can help you figure it out.
