A Service Dog handler friend of mine created this due to discrimination issues they have been facing over their need for a SD. These issues are currently in North Carolina but happen all over. Even if you don't want to sign the petition what is wrote is great education.

This can also occur in adult dogs from shelters or dogs from breeders or puppy raisers.
I am in no way saying it always does or that you shouldn't get dogs from any of these places but please look out for these things and be prepared to work through them with a qualified trainer.

I will also say that another thing that may happen is one dog will rely on being confident only when it is with the other dog. Therefore showing fear and lack of confidence without the other dog. While this can be a minor thing it will need to be worked through slowly, with kindness, and the right tools.

Sorry to all the kids who just found out the Easter Bunny isn't real... but just as parents fool kids into believing it is, scammers fool people into believing service dogs require certification or registration.
In the US there is no government recognized certification or registration for service dogs or ESAs and anything promoting one is a scam. If you have questions about the laws regarding service dogs a great group is ESA and Service Dog Laws- USA

I tell my clients this all the time! Training is making your dog lay down when you're eating or sitting before getting attention. It's everyday things that can easily be implemented into everyday life!

ATTENTION!!!
The AKC has decided that they are qualified to determine if a service dog team is real or not and certify them. While at first it may seem like a good thing it is NOT! They will require any teams that aren't from an organization to pass a special test which is restrictive to handlers in rural areas and low income. It will make it hard for teams whose main task is to alert to a medical episode because they will have to prove the dog is trained to do it. Also according to federal law there is no recognized certification or registration for service dogs but with this program businesses will start trying to refuse any handler who doesn't have this certification whether they are a real service dog or not. Please do not encourage the use of this or any other certification and if you feel obligated reach out and voice your concerns to the AKC. Again this is not a good thing, people in wheelchairs aren't required to pass tests or be certified neither should any one else with a disability in need of medical equipment!

The AKC Service Dog Pass credential is given to applicant teams who are evaluated by an approved Service Dog Pass evaluator. Do you know the difference between a Service Dog (SD), Therapy Dog, and Emotional Support Animal (ESA)? A lot of people confuse the three but mainly confuse SD and ESA.

For both a SD and an ESA the owner has to have a disability according to the ADA.
The difference is a SD is task trained to help the person with a disability while an ESA is just there to provide comfort. ESAs are considered pets outside of the home and are NOT allowed to fly or in non-pet friendly stores. The reason for this is because SDs have to go through years of training to be able to behave and confidently handle being in public whereas ESAs aren't required to have any training.
A therapy dog is trained to comfort other people besides its handler in settings like hospitals, schools, and group homes. The handler does not have to be disabled to own a therapy dog but does require in most cases to have it trained and certified.

Socialization for service dogs is extremely important and starts from day 1! A good breeder will start exposing puppies to different things in a safe manner, such as sounds and smells within the first few weeks of birth and handle them regularly as puppies.
A service dog has to have the right temperament and part of that has to do with the socialization it receives. A service dog can't be fearful or reactive in any situation so exposure and proper socialization is so important.

In recognition of National service dog month this is a video of Comet's first official PA outing over a year ago! Comet is from KansasDoodles.com and has since been trained and placed as a psychiatric service dog! My favorite part of training service dogs is watching how much of an impact they have on their humans lives!

It's National Service Dog Month!

Did you know that service dogs don't work 24/7? They still get time to be normal goofy dogs! My Service Dog loves to play fetch and snuggle with her stuffed animals. I have trained other service dogs who love snow and playing with other doggy friends.

It's Therapy Dog Appreciation Week! I am happy to say I have gotten to work with so many future/potential therapy dogs in the last few years. While I don't do therapy dog certification I have gotten to help with the temperament testing and obedience portions for many dogs who have gone on to be therapy dogs.

Second Chances is moving!!!!

I am relocating from KS to NJ so will not be taking clients for awhile. Thank you everyone for all of the support and I am hoping for bigger and better things in the near future!
