How do I brush my pet’s teeth?

Your veterinary team can demonstrate proper brushing techniques for your pet. In most cases, it is sufficient to brush the outer edges of the teeth. Your veterinarian can also supply you with the proper cleaning supplies. All you need is:

A soft toothbrush. There are special brushes designed for pets, an alternative is a soft fingertip brush.

Palatable pet toothpaste. Do not use toothpaste designed for humans as it may contain ingredients that are not safe for pets.

Treats. Choose a treat that your pet does not need to chew but can lick easily, such as a dab of cream cheese or yogurt.

The Coton de Tulear, also known as the ‘royal dog of Madagascar’, it is a long-established breed that takes its name from Tulear, a port town on the island’s southwest coast. It is said that in the 15th century several Bichon-type dogs from Tenerife survived a pirate shipwreck and swam to Tulear, where they interbred with local terriers, resulting in the Coton de Tulear. It became a very popular dog in the royal homes, so much so that a law was published that prohibited having this breed to anyone who did not belong to the nobility of Madagascar.

The border collie originated in Britain around the English and Scottish border during the 1800s.
A defining event was the advent of the first competitive sheepdog trial in 1873, in which a dog named H**p made such a good showing that he became sought after for stud. H**p is considered to be the father of the border collie.
H**p and his progeny herded not by nipping and barking, as was commonplace, but by staring and stalking (known as "giving eye"). This intimidated the sheep into moving.

Did you know dental treats and toys can reduce plaque buildup on your pet's teeth?

The simple mechanical action of chewing can reduce plaque buildup, and some dental treat products contain anti-tartar ingredients. If your pet chews through their edible treats too quickly, non-edible dental chew toys may be a good choice for your pet!

Ask our team about about the right dental treats and chew toys.

Did you know that over 80% of dogs over the age of three have active dental disease?

Few dogs show obvious signs of dental disease, so it is up to the dog's family and veterinarian to uncover this hidden and often painful condition. The good news is that regular cleanings can help prevent dental disease and keep your pet healthy!

Brushing your pet’s teeth daily will not only prevent tartar formation but also give you a chance to detect potentially serious changes in your pet’s health.

Plaque normally forms on teeth every day, but if it is not removed within 48 hours, it begins to harden into tartar that cannot be brushed away but must be professionally scraped. In addition, bacteria in the mouth can contribute to infections in other organs such as the heart and kidneys.

Most pets also benefit from a professional cleaning at least once every year. Your veterinarian will help you decide the best strategy for keeping your pet’s teeth and gums healthy.

11/18/2024

Feline infectious peritonitis (FIP) is an important disease of domestic cats. It occurs worldwide in cats of all ages, but the disease is most common in young cats less than two years of age.
FIP appears to be more common in cats that live in multi-cat households, shelters, or catteries. Cats that are stressed due to re-homing, have recently had surgery, or have concurrent infections (more than one infection at a time) may also be more susceptible to developing FIP. Genetic factors are also thought to contribute to the development of FIP. Male cats are affected more often than females. Purebred cats, including Abyssinian, Bengal, Birman, Himalayan, Ragdoll, and Devon Rex may be predisposed to developing FIP.
