: Tensor Fasciae Latae

The Tensor Fasciae Latae, or TFL, is the stifle muscle in the horse. It originates at the tuber coxae and inserts in two places, 1. the fascia lata of patella and 2. cranial border of the tibia. The purpose of this muscle is to flex the hip, extend the stifle and draw the limb forward. Activation of this muscle usually begins at the stance phase and slows down at the early stage of the swing phase.

𝑰𝒔𝒔𝒖𝒆𝒔: Lack of impulsion, short stride in the hind, difficulty engaging, toe dragging, restriction in stifle and hip flexion.

π‘¨π’•π’“π’π’‘π’‰π’š in this muscle could be an indicator that the horse has stifle joint issues, or a weak stifle in general.

𝑭𝒖𝒏 𝑭𝒂𝒄𝒕: In Latin, TFL means "stretcher of the wide band"

I love it when a horse is as expressive as Miss Hannah is. She knows what she likes πŸ’“πŸ’–

What do these images have in common?

Throughout the orange there is connective tissue, in between each segment, and a tough β€œskin” encasing each individual smaller segment called vesicles.

This method of connecting and encasing groups of cells is mirrored in the horse.
The fascia encases and connects groups of muscles. This connectivity goes right down to a cellular level and right up to create large fascia like the thoracolumbar or gluteal fascia. The fascia also creates lines through the body creating myofascial kinetic lines.

Every biological entity is made up of systems upon systems, existing in symbiosis for the collective good. Even our own evolutionary story is one of endosymbiosis. Bacteria interacting with other organisms to create more powerful systems, held together by β€œsome kind” of connective tissue.

Fun fact!

: The π‘»π’“π’‚π’‘π’†π’›π’Šπ’–π’” or "traps"

The trapezius covers the withers and goes half way up the neck. It is split into two sections: cervical trapezius and thoracic trapezius.

π‘ͺπ’†π’“π’—π’Šπ’„π’‚π’ π‘»π’“π’‚π’‘π’†π’›π’Šπ’–π’”: Moves the shoulder upward and forward
π‘»π’‰π’π’“π’‚π’„π’Šπ’„ π‘»π’“π’‚π’‘π’†π’›π’Šπ’–π’”: Moves the shoulder upward and back
𝑰𝒔𝒔𝒖𝒆𝒔: Girthy (from the pressure of the saddle), sensitive withers, short or choppy stride/loss of freedom in the shoulders, difficulty with leads.
π‘«π’Šπ’”π’„π’Šπ’‘π’π’Šπ’π’†π’”: Jumpers/eventers can cause damage to this muscle when landing. Barrel racers, cow sorting, cutting horses can aggravate this muscle by suddenly stopping, quick change of direction and turns.
𝑴𝒖𝒔𝒄𝒍𝒆 𝒉𝒆𝒍𝒑𝒆𝒓𝒔: The trapezius works together with the brachiocephalicus and rhomboids to move the shoulder up, forward and back.

Atrophy in this muscle could be an indicator of a horse with an abnormal gait pattern/lameness where they are not fully extending and contracting these muscles.

Fun fact: This is the muscle that is always tight on me! Why? Because I am lifting my hands (thus lifting my shoulders) to reach the horse.

I know a few of these!

Every horse has a different personality and opinion of massage. Part 2 features some of the "bigger personality" horses I come across. Does your horse break out of their shell during their massage to display these actions?

How much can we influence by the farriery options we choose? Here is a horse pre and post shoeing, photos taken one hour apart. Note the change in angle of the pastern, the horse is now longer behind the knee and the development at the scapula from an improved posture.

β€œWould my horse benefit from a session? He/she is not injured”

YES! Our modern domesticated horses are athletes and need to be treated in kind. We would never expect a human athlete in active (or worse, sporadic) training to be completely pain free so we shouldn’t expect the same from our horses. Therapy can be adapted to fit any horse, any discipline, any life stage, etc! Let me help you keep your partner comfortable ❀️

Cash’s Legacy

I set out to get certified in equine massage to help my show horse, β€œCash”’ stay sound and perform at his best. Over the last year I have completed 2 courses of online studies and 10 days of hands on education. We are also asked to complete 25 case studies for each course. I am currently working on finishing them and studying for the national board certification test.

I struggled for the last couple of months coming up with a name that had meaning but also made sense. The day after I returned from my last practical I unexpectedly lost horse, β€œCash.” He was the reason I discovered my passion for helping horses feel their best so it is his legacy that I am carrying on with my business. While I will miss him every time I work on a horse I do so in his honor.
